Aug 21. Mrs Kate Webber 60, and two children, a four year old boy and an infant, were burned when a kerosene can exploded while reviving a slow fire in a camp store near Witham. Mrs Webber died at 2:30 pm. Deputy Coroner Alnutt investigated. funeral arrangements pending.
The marriage of Frederick H. Merten and Mabel Haney surprised many friends. The ceremony occurred Tuesday at the bride’s mother in Denver with only relatives present. Merten, six years Greeley high school principal, and Haney, a State Teachers college graduate and former Greeley teacher, will reside in a Price cottage on Twelfth Avenue when they return to Greeley early next month.
An extra daily train on the beet road serves farmers loading grain at Beet Yamps. Five to seven cars of wheat are moved daily, with farmers driving up to the cut out to load loose grain into the cars.
City council authorized Mayor Mayher to build a gate at Island Grove using boulders and cement with a 100 foot width and eight foot pedestrian entries. The project, costing under 250, aims to impress for the county fair starting September 23 and will include flag posts wired for lighting.
The Tribune advertises a one day Moffat road excursion from Weld County towns with departures from Ault Eaton Greeley Evans LaSalle Platteville Lupston and more. Two year courtship ends in a morning ceremony at the brides parents home. Miss Evans wore white mesh dress and bouquet. Attendants were Miss Lucile Evans and a bridesman. Rev W A Phillips officiated. Guests included out of town visitors from Sterling, Fort Yore an and Venice California. The couple plan a ranch home near Winfield Iowa after October 1.
Willis Moore of the Weather Bureau states no device or method has proven effective against hail storms. A Weld County Commercial Club inquiry cited European reports, but Moore notes all tests to date are worthless. Also, Mrs. John Rankin visits Greeley after summers in Estes Park and Tarkio, Missouri.
Windsor reports a 12 year old boy Thomas Gormley was subjected to a more serious ear operation today, ten hours after Dr. T B Gormley had a slight procedure. The father had driven to Greeley last night and was operated on there with Dr. Ringle.
Estimates prepared by Weld County assessor deputies and Secretary McCrery of the Weld County Commercial Club show a drop in potato acreage and a rise in sugar beets this year. The report notes favorable beets growing conditions versus last year’s, with winter and spring wheat and oats and barley tallied in a official table.
Marlborough millinery shop at 984 Ninth Avenue reopens for fall with a complete line from national centers. Former owner Mrs Marie Brooks returns under a new married name Morris M Rathbun. Other notes include a Mexican wedding in Milliken and a buried silver watch found near the new high school. People involved include Pete Benevidas Delores Archuleta John Holland Nelson Demorest and F E Rockwell.
United States post office inspector from Denver reports loss at the Platteville post office totals 400 dollars in stamps and 50 dollars in cash after a day long examination. Weld county officers assist in the case but no trace of the thief yet found.
Ward Darley said after meeting the securing committee that 6000 acres are secured and finance is ready. He will travel east to attract Eastern capital for Weld County independent sugar factories. E H Dyer will discuss construction with George Briggs in La Salle before Darley’s trip to Greeley to speak with the Farmers' Union.
The fair introduces a children's department with premiums for garden products and work by children under 16. It is the first year these premiums are offered and management plans to make it a permanent part of the premium list. Parents are urged to encourage participation for beneficial results.
Evans Aug 21 17 year old Robert Huffsmith son of Charles Huffsmith is Evans youngest engineer. He studied at a correspondence school and this summer has been applying his knowledge as engineer at the town pump house. Saturday night he oversaw the Greeley sub station of the Northern Colorado Power company.
London Aug 21 General William Booth commander in chief of the Salvation Army died at 10 30 pm in his London home after a long illness. Born Nottingham 1829 he was unconscious for 48 hours before death. His son Bramwell Booth and wife cared for him as family members eight children survived except Emma Booth Tucker killed in a railway accident.
