Tribune sponsors a contest offering free world’s fair trips to readers who subscribe or settle delinquent accounts. Contestants from various districts gather as promoters push signups and payments to qualify for travel prizes and recognition.
The Tribune urges contestants not to be discouraged as new subscribers drive credits toward rail fare and expenses. Twenty five new one year subscriptions earn the contestant a rail and Pullman trip to St Louis, with fifty and one hundred subs boosting travel and daily expense money. The top two win the trip free. contestants report strong support and increased interest as the contest nears its close.
Weld county residents compete for a trip with credits from clipped Trib coupons, cash payments and ad deposits. Credits award voting power: five per coupon, 500 for one year, 200 for old-subscriber payments, 20 per want ad. Winners include the top Greeley resident and the top outside candidate.
The Elks last Thursday evening installed new officers elected at the meeting. Exalted ruler Frank Madden heads the group with Ray C. Watson and George W. Weber as leaders. Appointive officers include George E. Settle and Elbert G. English. Past Exalted Ruler Cross of Fort Collins was the installing officer. Denver lodge plans a visit this evening describing the mother daughter relationship.
Referee Patton of Boulder reduced W R Adams claim of 6.89 cubic feet per second in the Big Thompson and Hillsboro ditches to two feet per second for continuous irrigation. The decision, a new limit on the irrigation season, will go to district court. Greeley's water supply remains stressed as wells run low, with irrigation expected to ease pressure.
Ole Nelson was struck from behind with a sandbag near his home in Greeley around 9 PM Saturday and remained unconscious until Sunday evening. Dr. Law attended him. Nelson, a popular former high school athlete and confectionery shop operator, suspects personal enmity rather than robbery.
A state report by Section Director F. H. Brandenburg details March precipitation from 94 stations. Most sites saw above average snowfall, with Gunnison and Rio Grande regions showing extreme accumulations while Villa Grove in Rio Grande county recorded the lightest. The report notes widespread snow late in March, melting at lower elevations but promising strong flows and revived ground conditions for spring.
The commission approves basement rooms for new offices and a central basement hallway. The county surveyor will occupy the rear basement room, while the county judge moves upstairs to the former superintendent’s space.
Rose Cecilia Shay Grand Opera company presented Carmen to a mostly unresponsive crowd in Greeley. Some patrons admitted it was better than expected while others stayed silent, though individual performances by Miss Shay, Mr Fredericks, Francis Carrier, and Miss Carrington drew warmer reactions than the chorus and overall production.
The Tribune ad reading contest drew many correct entries. J Henry Couture won $2.50, J T Cameron $1.50, and W H Rogers $1. each winner received a box of Gunther's chocolate drops.
The home of John Rocho operator of the Red Front was entered Saturday night. The only valuable recovered is Rocho’s watch, found in his vest pocket after he retired. A pocket knife and small purse with peonies, plus Mrs Roche’s handkerchiefs, were stolen. Entry is believed to be through an unlocked door left overnight.
On the occasion of the 85th anniversary a splendid ball will be held in Longmont on April 26. A special train via Colorado & Southern Railway leaves Greeley at 8 a.m. and returns from Longmont at midnight. Round trip fare is $1.25.
R R Wagstaff a clerk in Goodman and Wasley’s store fears for his wife who vanished a week ago after leaving home in a fit of mental aberration. She was last seen at the Brown Palace hotel in Denver where police have searched. The Wagstaffs moved from Wichita to Colorado. Reports say she has periods of acting and painted her face prior to the disappearance. A later Denver report states she was found in a hotel there.
R R Moodie and Dr S R Oppenheim report progress on plans for a starch plant in Greeley. Construction to begin by May with a daily capacity near 100 tons and about twenty workers, likely on a lot south of the Greeley Ice and Light plant.
