Quiet Town Election Returns Show Small Margin

The town election passed quietly with 374 votes cast, 16 fewer than last year. The caucus ticket won all seats. water commissioner J B Wiliane received 367 votes and pound master J E B Wiliane 367. Bond votes failed 165 to 124. paid trustees failed 125 to 102. recorder Fred McDonald led by 59. Taxpayers voted on the bond question.

Sterling News Highlights Local Business and Coal Find

Mr J L Parrotte of Omaha bought by Ebbs Martin Co this week. H L Clark builds a fourth business room on Main Street now rented by George Martin. Hon L Ogilvy recovered 1960 damages from Union Pacific for mules killed at North Platte. Over eighty car loads of emigrant movables unloaded at Ogallala in March. Union Pacific surveyors map a line from North Platte south side and a line from Ogallala north to intercept it. Mr H L Spencer reports a thin coal vein on his Sterling farm. Coal now hauled from Erie Weld County and Rock Springs Wyoming. Three secret lodges exist in Sterling Knights of Pythias fifty, Knights of Labor forty six, Free Masons twenty seven. These societies rent and fit a large schoolhouse hall 25x50 feet. New carpet and furniture enhance the hall. A large Odd Fellows body is forming in Sterling.

Installation Exercises in United Presbyterian Church Greeley

The United Presbyterian Presbytery of Colorado met in Greeley on Friday April 3. Rev I A Ferguson of Loveland opened Bible readings and Rev W H McCreery of Fort Collins led a second session on spiritual work laws. Friday evening Rev H F Wallace was installed as pastor with ordination of C S Patten and Richard Patterson and installation of J M Wallace as ruling elders.

Alfalfa plantings from last year are thriving this spring. Jim Devin to plant 125 acres of oats and may contract 7500 bushels to supply John Bull's cavalry. Tyler Haskell ships sheep pelts and notes a healthy flock with fifty spring lambs. Twenty five plow teams operate near Fort Morgan. Local character Smooth-top Baker early morning antics. brother in law Luce arrives from Wisconsin with family to be welcomed despite a shadow.

Evans Takes Charge of Eaton Hotel in New Arrangement

J A Evans formerly of Wyoming Territory and later of Greeley now runs the Eaton hotel with a new scheme for shared responsibility among boarders and visitors. The town notes Horace Greeley not yet represented in the public school library and reports a donation from Mr Hussey of Denver of Recollections of a Busy Life and The American Conflict. The library remains free to district citizens with a $3 deposit for returnable books.

School children hold hillside picnic near town

The Brush Lariat reports that local school children enjoyed a picnic in the hills east of town on Friday. Rain Thursday was welcome for farm and range, though more rain would help farmers and stockmen. John Gilbertson was appointed to oversee Platte & Beaver Improvement Company interests here this year.
