A reader shares a home remedy for whooping cough using a tightly wrapped stomach belt, claiming relief in five hours and cures in days, while noting medical advice. Also announced is a G A R memorial service at the Opera House on Memorial Sunday with Rev A E Dubber delivering the address and the high school choir and orchestra performing.
The Unique Club en é ladies and their husbands held a dinner Monday night at Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Rameau’s home. Seven hostesses served a six course meal at small tables with floral decorations. Prizes were awarded in cards with H. M. Arbuckle winning first, J. D. Potter second, and Arbuckle also taking consolation. Twenty members attended.
A business change occurs at Severance as the Teller Pettepier Mercantile store is acquired by Nixon and Rogers for 10000 dollars. A. Nixon becomes president and A. Rogers vice president while Pettepier serves as secretary and GM. Nixon will devote most of his time to the store. Rogers remains at Severance State Bank as cashier. The firm is described as one of the town’s most prosperous business houses.
Port Lupton sees a booming phase with rising business ventures and new enterprises. The Sperry Cran project marks a landmark in the town’s first year, signaling ongoing development and revival for Fort Lupton.
Last night the Eastern Ster lodge hosted a sock social where each member invited a guest and exchanged tiny socks in pennies. The program featured solos by Mrs. EB. N. Sfii ler Professor T. Fitz and Miss Murchi son, a reading by Miss Reed, a quartet Stuk ey Starkey Thompson and Hatch, a floral drill by officers, and a violin solo by Harry Faulkner with Mrs. F. P. Matthews. Refreshments followed as attendees enjoyed the evening.
The LaSalle-Hillsboro branch of the Union Pacific begins work immediately with the unloading of the crading outfit under Goodman, a Kilpatrick Bros subcontractor. The project, long awaited, promises substantial benefit to the Hillsboro region as crews mobilize with horses, men and tools on site.
Six young women from Greeley Normal LaSalle Kersey and Evans high schools compete for the Evans special gold medal in a county declamatory contest at Young's hall tonight. Additional contestants are expected as the event features a musical program and a large audience.
A surveying unit in Crow Creek country was thought to be mostly Union Pacific men but one worker paid with a Burlington check confirms a non UP involvement. The survey crossed Crow Creek thirteen miles east of Lucerne, began at Hardin, followed UP lines, then branched northeast.
LaSalle addition expands as Ellis ranch borders the town and surveys begin. The Ellis addition will add three new blocks amid a town boom with more lots anticipated for sale. Construction starts on the new bank building and the seti remains underway.
W R Adams chair of the Railroad Committee asks Greeley citizens to attend a Friday 7 30 p m mass meeting at the court house to decide on funding the Denver Laramie Northwestern rail line. The drive seeks 37 500 in cash donations or 150 000 in bonds to land the main line through the city. He notes ten local fortunes totaling at least 5 000 000 could donate 3 750 each to secure the project and boost town values.
Coroner Macy was summoned after a traction engine owned by Elmer E. Peck exploded while being used on a gangplow near Hudson. Elmer Peck and engineer J A Smith died instantly. a rear rider was badly injured. The exact cause awaits coroner’s inquest findings.
Street Supervisor Seaman oversees eight to ten men at work removing old stumps near the city park to earn poll tax payments. Each able bodied man must supply two days of city labor or pay three dollars about one thousand men affected and three thousand dollars added to the street fund. Veterans of Civil or Spanish Wars and fire department members are exempt. Last year some refused to pay and faced about ten dollars in costs to settle.
Fort Collins May 26 S M Allen and EB N Sandy both of Collins were arrested this morning on perjury charges connected to the Leftwich case. Leftwich previously stood trial for shooting William Austin and testified the incident involved indecent language on a C and 8 train. The first trial ended in a disagreement and the second saw Allen and Sandy testify that Leftwich assaulted Austin. A confession from one alleged juror is reported.
Dr. Waters the likely new president, accompanied by Prof. Carpenter President Aylesworth and Governor Brush, toured the Agricultural college premises today. A reception at the Northern hotel last night connected him with the faculty and local leaders as a final decision is anticipated in coming days.
Denver May 26 The state assessors near end of second day plan to vote on applying a 33 1 3 percent basis or a 40 percent basis for county assessments. Most members appear inclined to keep the 33 1 3 percent, resisting governor proposed extra appropriations.
Mr. Pearce and Mr. Reaser of the Denver Greeley interurban are in town and decline publication of news about their proposed electric line. They have spent two weeks visiting small towns along the planned route between here and Denver.
Mr and Mrs H A Russell marked their twentieth wedding anniversary with a surprise gathering at home on Saturday evening. About twenty relatives and friends attended, sharing lunch and a fine supper. A social time followed and Miss Jessie Fink read an original poem before the couple received fine china gifts.
A Decoration Day program will be held May 31 at 2 p m in the Armory. The event features the Star Spangled Banner by seventh and eighth grades and audience, an invocation by Rev J J Lace remarks by chairman Prof C B Carter Gettysburg address by Prof W C Thomas memorial hymn by seventh and eighth grades address by Rev W B Gillis America chorus and audience.
The Greeley high school senior class held a class day program in the school auditorium Tuesday night. The event featured a full program including orchestra selections, a 1909 Chronicle reading by William Wreu Swanger, piano solo Mamie Glazier, a class gift presentation by Harry Robbins, vocal duets Florence Potter and Alice Taylor, recitation by Alice Gibson, violin Eugene Fisk, the president’s farewell by Ernest Tuck, assisted by Mary Thompson, Gladys Morgan, and Robert Smith, and closed with a class song. The graduating exercises are set for Thursday evening at the Methodist church.
Miss Eva Newton and Elsie Mc Cobb hosted a farewell party Tuesday night at Mrs. Newton’s home in honor of Miss Mabel Wilson who has lived in Greeley with her sister Mrs. C. T. Neill. Guests were close friends as Miss Wilson leaves soon for her father’s home east. The evening featured games, music, refreshments and gifts for the guest of honor.
From April 1 last year to April 1 this year the volunteer fire department logged twenty runs. Chief Patterson notes total city fire loss under $1,100, excluding a brickyard fire outside city limits costing about $8,000. Since April 1 losses reached $400, including the McCain barn fire. He suggests $800 could have been saved with faster arrival and an apparatus. Most damage came from water.
The Arbuckle and Purcell Land Co plans a colorful booklet for Weld County. It features a county map by Clason Co Denver, a color chart of the Greeley Poudre irrigation district, and color images of farms industries and homes. Land prices quoted from $20 to $30 per acre with widespread distribution in the central states.
E. A. Mead forms a partnership with his Denver based brother in the automobile business and the Mead family departs by car for Denver after a brief stay in Greeley. Mead, former mayor of Ault, leaves behind many friends who regret the move.
Ex governor Orman reports grading finished up to mile 23 on the D L N W line with work to reach mile 39 by month end at the second Platte river bridge. Headquarters move from Platteville to Hillsboro is planned and track laying to resume from mile 13 northward on January.
The district court excused the jury until 10 o clock Thursday to allow several motions before the jury cases. The judge intended to pass upon these motions prior to resuming the jury trials.
Two workmen violated the quarantine at Sprague camp and a warrant was planned for their arrest. Dr McCain health commissioner ordered dismissal of wages to enforce the quarantine. The men sued Sprague for their pay in Justice Hatch's court, and will be arrested and sent to the pesthouse.
The Yeagys, a newly married couple, arouse the town when arriving by train at seven with a staged getaway. They attempt to elude friends by a quick hotel arrival but are met by a cart and auto. The bridal pair are paraded through town amid public interest and familiarity.
The Fort Lupton Grays schedule three games with Cheyenne on May 29 30 and 31. They recently beat Brighton Stars 8 to 6 and also defeated Longmont Colorado Company and Kuner of Denver.
Funeral services for the late Grace M. Clark who died March 9 in Bombay India will be held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon in the Congregational church. The ashes will be interred here.
Highlandlake school held its commencement at the church on Friday evening May 21. The program featured a reading by Miss Luella Daven and a talk on country school needs by Miss Maud Frantz, with all participants performing admirably. Denver May 26. In federal court George J. Spear won an injunction against the Union Pacific Railroad over rights of way near Watud mountain.
