In Glasgow an explosion at Marathon Manufacturing Co yard on a Texas firm site killed one man and injured six others. Robert Docherty died in Western Infirmary about five hours after the blast as a deck fragment blew about 70 yards across the yard.
The Weld County Library launches a summer reading program Monday centered on Alice in Wonderland. Children aged three and up can join, with librarians assisting in registration and book selection. Each child gets an Alice bookmark and a tally sheet, and credit is given for books read by others for preschoolers. For every five books, a stair step is earned on a large display. program runs until August 13 with a final ceremony and certificates for 15 books.
Navy Senior Chief Jerry Kober announced a two month temporary attaché at the Navy recruiting office in Greeley. Judy Gilbertson of Des Moines Iowa, a UNC nursing student in the Navy Nurse Corps scholarship program, was selected as a Navy nurse in June 1972 and will graduate to become a Navy nurse. Also noted is Gary Lohmann son of Edgar H Lohmann of Greeley earning a B A and commissioning as a second lieutenant in the USAF Reserve after UNC spring graduation.
Independence House, a VA hospital satellite, continues to offer treatment for veterans with diverse drug problems. The program includes in patient rehab detoxification with methadone, outpatient care, maintenance, job help, legal referrals, jail counseling, and crisis intervention. The University of Northern Colorado reduces general education hours in nursing, the bachelor of music sequence, and medical technology from 60 to 42. The change, approved by the curriculum committee and faculty senate, introduces a liberalized program with five areas and an ICU course unit. All first time students starting summer quarter must follow the new sequence, while existing students may stay under the old plan or switch.
