A reader asks about handling a VA pension check issued to a deceased husband. The guidance: return the final check, and if eligible for widow's pension, the final payment is issued at the husband's rate if higher than the widow's rate, followed by checks at widow's pension rates.
District Court resumed selection of about 30 jurors for the county grand jury to investigate jail conditions and sheriff operations. Earlier motions to disqualify Judge Carpenter and special prosecutor Willis were denied. appeals were not pursued. Also noted are 1973 Hungary cotton import estimates of 350,000 to 375,000 bales with 10 percent extra-long staple from Egypt and Sudan.
The Colorado Senate approved a regional planning act 32 to 2 adding an amendment that would let counties over 65,000 enter boundary adjustment deals with permit from regional commissions. The bill allocates 3.7 million to fund 13 regional commissions and mapping of hazard areas while preserving local control.
Governor John Love warned he will veto the land use act if the House alters it away from stronger controls. He criticized the Senate rewrite for lacking penalties, state framework, and timely regional plans, urging boundary rules and possible power boosts for the Land Use Commission. He noted opposition from developers and locals, and said he would press for constitutional homestead relief and higher property tax relief.
About a dozen attendees at Arlington school Thursday discussed Tuesday's recall vote against Rudy Marich. Betty and Mel Leedom outlined plans for a fall officer slate and a June 28 meeting to discuss the District Six superintendent choice. A recall campaign push was to start Friday with volunteers aiming to boost turnout.

New procedures include two guards at night, no trusties, fruit restricted, and improved cleanliness. Jones accuses some prisoners of lying to undermine the sheriff and jail.
Colorado's House votes to add 15.7 million to an appropriations bill for sewage systems and disposal plants as part of a 96 million program. Senate approved 19 million for the same purpose. An amendment to cut it to 3.5 million failed 18-43. A nursing board bill was preliminarily approved, while a judges salary increase remains under Senate amendment.
Denver AP report: Director Con F. Shea of the Department of Social Services opposed a proposal to divert money collected from deseritus Pete Swat Placen into county general funds. Shea urged the funds continue to support welfare programs and avoid reducing welfare.
