The Commercial club board fixed January 17 for its monthly banquet to avoid conflicting dates. Directors urged full attendance as many important topics will be discussed. Greeley will welcome a new retail outlet as Charles J. Crockett and W. B. Moody of St. Louis announce a January 15 opening. They will move from Ely Walker Co to occupy the former Park Dry Goods location with a fresh stock and plan to make Greeley their home.
P. W. Olsen resigns as LaSalle depot agent amid rising business. Relief Agent Denton will take over duties and the new appointee is expected soon. Olsen may stay in LaSalle and pursue local business opportunities.
LaSalle December 28 Burk and Shearer establish a cement block plant one block south and one west of the bank. They also secured the Fenley building contract to be usable by year’s start and plan a $5 000 hardware stock at opening. Subcontractor Hancock and McMahon to initiate work over Stewart's store as materials arrive and freight bills reach $1 000 for a week.
The county commissioners levy two mills to create a fund for a new court house expected to yield 32 918 dollars next year. Weld county imposes about 737 662 dollars in taxes on a 16 459 000 valuation, exceeding last year by one million. Irrigation district lands valued at 1 385 000 face an irrigation tax of 83 700 across five districts. Fifteen town valuations total 3 336 270 with 78 000 in taxes. Greeley stands at 2 000 000 and Eaton at 270 000 in valuation.
Ault reports the arrival of a new 25 horsepower pump house engine. The purchase, costing 1897 dollars, was approved by the town board after concerns the old engine could fail in an emergency.

He reportedly raised a 3.72 to 30.72, fled Alliance Nebraska, was tracked to Greeley then Denver, where detectives arrested him with requisition papers filed by E. J. Wilson.
Denver reports Governor Shafroth vows to feed starving Western slope stock if the state stock inspection board does not act. A herd of antelope near Canon City seeks food while game officials guard against hunters. The feeding authority was shifted from the child and animal protection bureau to the stock inspection board.
Philo Sanborn entertained about a dozen young friends Monday evening at his parents’ home. A Santa Claus greeted guests at the door, and another Santa distributed gifts from a tree in a festively decorated parlor.

In Steamboat Springs on Sunday night Fred Sayre a ranchman from the Hayden district and his wife escaped a burning home but ran back to rescue their 1-year-old child. The mother and father were burned severely and the child was cremated in the blaze.
Colorado Teachers association opened its mid winter session at East Denver high school with a push to have a revised school election law included in the governor’s spring special session. The council urged swift changes to curb alleged fraud and ensure an early enactment.
Platteville man Aaron Goss 47 was taken to the city jail by Deputy Sheriff Peterson after a spree of chasing imaginary skunks. He has wandered the prairie tearing up land in a delusion of clearing the country, and will undergo a sanity investigation while held in jail.
Coal is moving down with Gorham coal at 4.00 from 4.50 and industrial coal at 3.75, down from 4.25. Those with full bins may feel sore while buyers cheer the price drop, and Will Carter hosts dinner for Mr Moodie of Denver this evening.
Mr and Mrs Ed C Davis hosted a large gathering at their Davis home west of Greeley on Christmas day with twenty one guests. Among the visitors were Mr and Mrs 3 A Noyes and three children, Mr and Mrs J F Jackson and daughters Bessie Sylvia and Lillie of Fort Lupton, Mr and Mrs Earl Cassiday and three children of Fort Lupton, and C L Davis of Lucerne. The day was described as delightful.
Two lamps filled with gasoline sold as kerosene endangered the Watts ranch in Delta Sunday night. The clerk at a Greeley hardware store allegedly filled the order incorrectly. Flames flickered as Mrs. Watts tried to smother the blaze. the kitchen lamp exploded first, but Mr. Watts extinguished the fire with little damage.
Mrs. Belle Rup wife of a Burlington watchman was found dead in the Platte river after a suspected home invasion. Police report a confrontation with Robert Williams a well known Denver resident who has been arrested. The case raises questions about motive and details remain unclear.
Local Odd Fellows plan to push a proposition to the Commercial Club for a grand home to shelter indigent members. The project would cost thousands, add beauty to Greeley and the state, and echo moves seen in other regions as the lodge seeks support for a funded facility.

A Rankin family reunion occurred at the home of Mr and Mrs J A Rankin. Mrs R M Crawford and baby visited for several weeks, with Mr Crawford arriving from Tarkio Missouri for a few days. Mrs Clayton MacMillan of Cedarville Ohio arrived on Thursday for several days longer. Walter, home from agricultural college for Christmas, may stay through spring.
State board inspectors report one unsanitary site the county jail due to crowding and insufficient funds for remodeling. From Oct 31 1908 to Nov 15 1909 the jail held 231 men and twelve women with a day surge of thirty four prisoners. City jail and hospitals were found sanitary with varied inmate counts.
