Kipp Battles Hudson Bay to Build Fort Piegan
James Kipp led a 1831 expedition from Fort Union to the Marias river mouth to establish Fort Piegan against Hudson Bay Company pressure. After a bold siege and clever tactics including a dramatic cannon shot into a huge cottonwood, the American traders secured 6,450 beaver skins worth about 46,000 dollars and won Blackfeet trade, delaying British control in the upper Missouri frontier.
