What Senator Walsh Has Done For the Farmers

Washington, Sept 28. Summary of Senator Walsh’s work for farmers in northern and eastern Montana and new settlers statewide shows vast benefits. He secured five million dollars from the emergency war fund for crop relief, with Montana allotted funds for seed wheat loans and replanting. He backed higher wheat prices, saved Redwater settlers’ claims from the Northern Pacific, expanded Montana motion project funding, defended Flathead irrigation, and advanced rural settlement and irrigation acts. He pushed a ten million dollar Walsh highway bill for forests, supported Crow Indian settlement, and promoted farm service measures linking war service to land residence. He highlights the nation’s electric power, noting Western water power potential and large investments in power development with future growth expected.

The West Surpasses the East in Development

A regional opinion piece argues that eastern politicians lack vision for western growth. It contends the western states supply oil lumber war metals and ships and have developed one third of the hydroelectric capacity west of the Rockies.

How Much Wheat is Wasted in Straw

United States Feed and Estration for Montana details a method to measure wheat wasted in straw from threshing. A canvas sheet and a coarse screen 2 to 36 inches diameter are set up near a weighing device on the threshing line. After each weigh trip, straw passes onto the sheet, then wheat is separated by winnowing and screening. The result is recorded as pant measure and converted to percentage, listing fractional waste amounts from under 1 percent to 8 percent.
