Berman Dies After Stroke of Apoplexy in Muskegon

Loren O. Berman, 59, a renowned Muskegon City band leader and musical director, suffered apoplexy after a carriage ride last night and died. A native of Ganataukua, Ontario, he was widely respected in Michigan circles and affiliated with a well known fraternity.

Hawgood Sails Free After Coal Dump Incident

The coal carrier Arthur H. Hawgood ran aground near Cat Head Point in Grand Traverse Bay in mid September. After dumping over 1,000 tons of coal to lighten the ship, she refloated and was able to proceed under her own power. The Hawgood carried over a half million tons of coal in total. Bere from Port Huron, the vessel was reported safe.

Dynamite Explosion Kills One Brother and Injures Another

An explosion of dynamite at West Brook near Kinkston Ontario this morning killed Harry Smith instantly and fatally injured his brother Alfred Smith. Both men were married and residents of Cleveland.

Machines Not Legal Prompt Republican Nominee Victory

The Michigan Supreme Court ruled voting machines used in a primary election illegal. Charles Line of Menominee county wins the Republican prosecuting attorney nomination after the first Spalding precinct ballot was discarded for machine use. Bradley narrowed Warner’s lead by about 40 votes as other townships’ results were invalidated for ballot issues.

In Cedar Run on Saturday and Sunday heroic efforts by Ross Payne and volunteers saved the town and much lumber owned by Jerry Sullivan.
