Circulation this week 2,900 reports Detroit and other cities alarmed by a shortage of freight cars hindering farm and factory shipments. Andrew H. Green Jr of Salway Process Co. argues railroads need billions to update lines and cars, calling for higher rates to fund improvements, while observers warn such increases would disrupt business. Michigan faces coal and car shortages, risking industrial and agricultural losses without relief.
At Grant town hall on March 21 officers were nominated for the local government and a straw vote on local option yielded 31 dry votes to 18 wet. Mrs Champion remains in Traverse City caring for her ill sister, Mrs Woodman serving as state chaplain.
Wednesday March 27 at Grant town hall will feature a lecture on local option by Grange. The Ladies' Aid will serve dinner at Allen Burrows' town meeting day. A full house attended the debate and spelling contest at the Canada schoolhouse last evening where the affirmative won the vote on the resolution that the president be elected by popular vote.

I J Dawes moves family into Beebe’s cement cottage awaiting summer residents. Yellow jaundice affecting several pupils.
Frank Conklin of Conklin Bros. visited Allyn and sold five silos near town to Bare and John Fewins. The community anticipates a near finalization of the Honor creamery. Jake White sold his farm and will lease Clark farm for the summer. Shutt mill may restart next week. Dow of Lake Superior Iron and Chemical Co. visited with his sealer. The R F D carrier faced a snow delay earlier in the week. Grant Brooks to make ties for EK H Allyn. O W Clark plans a new turbine wheel this spring.
Mrs Anna Padden and Mr Amil Peterson were Traverse City callers on Thursday. Olive Johnson and Anna Peterson visited from Traverse City last week. Amil Peterson and family moved to Interlochen. Ladies Aid plans an entertainment at Bendon on Saturday evening March 2. The Robine children return to school after a month of scarlet fever. Mrs Perry is very ill with pneumonia. Mrs Gannett also visited Traverse City on Wednesday. Ladies Aid met at Mrs Fisher and will meet in two weeks at Mrs Maggie Skilliter. Mrs Roberts attended the primary this week as they prepare Easter ecards. Miron Johnson is out of school due to illness. School closes Friday March 29 for one week. District No 2 Commissioner Hornsby stopped by the school on his way back from Green Lake.

School report for the month ending March 15 1812 shows Grammar Room with 20 teaching days 31 pupils enrolled average daily attendance 9 plus 27 plus and 89 plus percent attendance. Names listed for punctual students include Katie Bannon Lillian Stites Marietta Stites Gertrude Knieper Gertrude Lichty Gladys Brown Margaret Johnson Addie E Crisp with teacher Vida J Warkup. Primary Room lists 36 pupils 29 attendance with May Stites Asn Dutcher George Stoats Clifford Bannon Clarence Smith and Ren Taylor. teacher Vida J Warkup.

London March 27 final effort to end the coal strike hinges on miners accepting government terms. The miners federation has ordered a referendum on the minimum wage scale bill, which will pass the House of Lords tonight. If the miners vote yes, the strike will be declared off at once after April 5.
John Arbuckle, renowned sugar and coffee magnate and head of Arbuckle Bros., died suddenly at his New York home at age 74. A noted practical philanthropist, he supported children’s fresh air camps and founded a working men and women’s hotel.
An official notice before the April 1 1912 general election proposes bonds of ten thousand sixty dollars to purchase forty acres of land owned by Traverse City Driving Park Association for county fairs and agricultural exhibitions. The ballot asks voters yes or no on bonding the county for the needed land. The land is described in legal terms in Traverse City Michigan. Elmer E White county clerk certifies the notice dated February 18 1917.

Traverse county Michigan considers a ten thousand dollar loan backed by faith and credit of the county to issue forty acres of land at Traverse City. The resolution sets a general election and ballot form for the loan backed by lands in West Quarter Section one Township Twenty seven Range Eleven, totaling forty acres near Traverse City with sheriff FLL SHUTER noting dates March 11 12 13 15 21 26 28.
The home of tailor John Bowers in Thingsley caught fire last night about o'clock. Fire started in the upper story near the chimney and this part was badly damaged. The family moved valuables from the tower story. Estimated total damage not to exceed 800 dollars. The fire department did excellent work in saving the building.
