Edgar Metcalf of Fife Lake writes the Chicago chief of detectives seeking a housekeeper who could become a wife. He is 26, owns a farm, belongs to three lodges, lives alone six years, does not drink, and can provide solid recommendations.
John A. Loranger of Traverse City has been appointed a delegate to the national fraternal congress to be held at Put-in-Bay Ohio on August 17. He represents Michigan with its thousands of Maccabees and will meet prominent leaders from across the country. The appointment was signed by George S. Lovelace great commander of the K O T M M.
Fire gutted the Williamsburg potato warehouse on Friday with witnesses saying flames appeared to start inside the building rather than from the roof. Elwin Hill of Starke & Company was in the building that morning and left with everything apparently fine.
Fritz Bettner W B Williams and W M Bottenberg completed a 116 mile Charlevoix trip Sunday in three White steamers without mishap or puncture. The travelers enjoyed excellent time and all occupants had an enjoyable trip. Bishop Potter Stronger Cooperstown N Y July 1 Bishop Potter, after a comfortable night, is stronger today. Mr and Mrs Feed Winch visiting here returned to Summit City yesterday.
In Rapid City Michigan a boy driving his father's team led the horses to a pond for a drink. They could not be controlled and, weighted by the wagon, struggled deeper, drowned despite efforts to save them. The pair, valued around 250 dollars, were nearly all Mr. Albert Ritter owned, having been bought this spring.
J C Madary of 34 Toast Wront street suffered heat exhaustion Thursday after being seen by a downtown physician. He grew worse on his way home, lay down several times, and fainted briefly at 4 pm. Ice packs at the base of the brain and other remedies restored him enough to resume work, though he remained weak.
Philip Pasternight a longtime Leelanau county citizen died at his Northport home at 11 o clock Thursday. He was 78, survived by widow, daughter Mrs Alice Cole of Everett Washington, five grandchildren including Mrs A J McPhail wife of Dr McPhail of this city. Born German in the 50s he settled near Northport clearing a farm and joined the Methodist church as a faithful member. His daughter Alice Cole has lived in the west and wintered with him.
A. W. Winnell of 850 Webster Street lost most of his right thumb and suffered a deep index finger cut after his hand caught in a cut off saw at the Oval Wood Dish factory on Monday. Companion Nelson Covery assisted in taking him to a physician. amputation of the thumb was required. Winnell is married with four children and will be unable to use his hand for some time.
Washington July 11 The interstate commerce commission announced its report approving a uniform bill of lading for adoption Two forms will be printed with different colors for straight and order consignments They differ only on the face side while the back conditions remain the same The order bill will be negotiable while the straight bill will be non negotiable
A Republican gathering is scheduled in the city opera house Thursday evening July 16 with Governor Fred M. Warner and Lieutenant Governor Patrick E. Kelley to speak. Warner travels the state delivering campaign positions while Kelley, noted for his oratory, is expected to draw strong local interest at this joint trustees meeting.
The Ladies Aid of Fourteenth Street Methodist church held a bazaar and supper in the church grove Friday night, raising about $250. Thanks go to Fernwood residents and local business men for support. Rev. L B Carpenter of Pellston attended and spoke, followed by subscriptions prompted by Rev. B H Fleming. The ladies aim to reduce church indebtedness.
London on July 11 prepares for the International Olympic Games at the Stadium with 2,000,000 seats reserved for spectators. Officials anticipate a large turnout as the event begins Monday.
The Grand Traverse Soldiers and Sailors association executive committee convened with Commander William Mears and L. K. Cleveland to set the next reunion dates. A motion set the event for September 9 10 11 and 12 with an executive committee of citizens to arrange encampment details. Sub committees were appointed: Walter Bates O P Carver L K Cleveland and M D Morgan. The committee adjourned to reconvene on call of the commander.
Charles Knox, a lock works employee from Vans Bay in the upper peninsula, had the first three fingers of his right hand smashed on a press Friday, requiring amputation. The accident deprives a baseball pitcher of ability and he warned there will be some time before he plays again.
Peninsula farmers struggle to secure cherry pickers as heavy rains and blistering suns ruin sweet cherry crops. James Hawkins, owner of a leading peninsula fruit farm, suffers among the heaviest losses after weather and labor shortages prevent harvest. About 15 cherry varieties were affected with many trees bearing spoiled fruit yet to be picked.
B. L. Adams and party arrived this morning aboard the 34 foot Sheledonia from Charlevoix. The eight horsepower auxiliary powered progress with light winds. At Omena the party rested before reaching here where Adams arranged with Mr. Miller of Motor Boat Co to handle local boats at Charlevoix. Republican Headquarters, Washington, July 18. Frank H. Hitcheack, new chairman of the Republican national ticket, left today for New York to arrange opening headquarters.
The United States battleship South Carolina was launched at Cramps shipyards, joining the Michigan as the second of the all big gun ships. The christening was performed by Miss Frederica Calvert Ansel, daughter of Governor Ansel of South Carolina, who attended with the governor.
A small launch saved two rowboat passengers after a sudden squall sent Mrs. LaBonta and Mrs. Slater adrift. Father Sheehan J D Middleton and Alec Hebert retrieved them as waves overwhelmed both boats. Both women were soaked and one passenger died later. LaBonta recovered and returned to work.
J. P. Oberlin drove to Elk Rapids Sunday in a Dolson automobile covering the distance in 34 minutes. A stranger asked him to escort him as his mother was very ill, perhaps dying, and Oberlin obliged. He did not learn the stranger’s name during the dash.
Roy Eckman, about 12, climbed a raft near Traverse City Motor Boat Co. as a southwest gale pushed it offshore. Charles Wilson of 115 North Division St. swam out, rescued the boy, and towed him back to shore. The raft was then secured to prevent further danger.
Fire completely burned the Starke and Company potato warehouse in Williamsburg Grand Rapids shortly before noon Friday. Frank H. Vinton discovered the blaze and a bucket brigade tried to control it, but the building and a nearby shed owned by Floyd Fox were destroyed. John Fitch, the firm’s principal member, had left on a fishing trip and could not be located. The contents were limited to sacks and handling implements. cause undetermined though thought to be a spark from a passing Pere Marquette train.
Lansing July 10 Judge Wiest directed the jury in the case of Representative Bunting charged with making a false certificate for expenses of a legislative junket to return a verdict of not guilty. The jury found the proofs failed to sustain the indictment and Bunting was released amid congratulations from friends.
In Beulah Home Box issue, an account notes memorial services held May 31 for Jane Raph Connable conducted by Rev. Air, McCime, or Poloskey. The piece clarifies Connable’s identity and mentions possible relation to a former City Book Store proprietor and a current buyer for 3 H Knox stores in Buffalo, with a letter to A Thompson.
The new Catholic church at Mapleton will be dedicated Tuesday at 10 oclock with Bishop Richter of Grand Rapids officiating.
A freight engine sparked a blaze that burned the Manistee River bridge south of Walton on the GR line. Crews saved the structure, but trains could not cross the bridge as flames and heat from dry wood and high winds made rescue work lengthy. Passengers on No. 3 faced a long delay while transfers were arranged.
Samuel Garland and Leon FiTtus joined 325 bankers traveling from Detroit on the City of St. Izmael to Marquette. They stopped at the Soo and Munising, attended a meeting aboard, elected Leon Chichester of Peloskey president, and planned to meet in the president’s home town next year.
A blaze on the third floor of the Wurzburg block at 4 O'clock yesterday, started by a shorted electric wire, sent dense black smoke pouring from windows. The bed and bedding burned, with smoke and water harming Miss McCarthy's furniture and clothing. she had no insurance.
