Post Office Budget Crisis and Plans to Modernize
The Post Office outlines three immediate aims to reduce losses, raise postage, and modernize operations. It seeks higher rates on first class mail, target a break-even axis with users paying more, and raise about half a billion dollars yearly. It also pushes a long range program to build post offices and speed mail by 80 to 50 percent, while warning of potential July 1 service cuts if funds are insufficient. The note cites a 1958 budget and expected mail volume growth, stressing economic impact of service curtailments.
