Morton Salt Company reports progress on a new mine shaft drilling six of eight holes in the second pre grouting series. Project Manager Nick Krpan and Superintendent Jack Spry say drilling is faster, sealing many ground crevices. a third series will test sealing effectiveness with about 200 tons of cement used so far.
Be in the Ed column as community notices. Granny Alphin of 125 Main Street Grand Saline is wished a happy birthday by readers. The piece mentions local families April Dawn, Jerry Waymire, Jill Tucker, Ronald Tucker, and others, noting tomato harvest season and social visits at the office.
Mrs. Clara MceMakin and Frank L Churchwell retire from Morton after long service at Grand Saline plant. Churchwell, electrician, began as a nine laborer in 1933 and served as union local president and helped found the Salt Employees Federal Credit Union. he and his wife Lottie have four children and 13 grandchildren. McMakin, a Packaging Department operator since 1940, plans garden and travel with husband Shan. they have three children and eight grandchildren.
A revival at S Flat Baptist Church runs Sunday June 22 through June 29 with Pastor Joe Wilbanks delivering messages. Music directed by Cleatus Carroll features morning 10:90 services and evening worship, prayer, and booster band sessions daily. Everyone is invited.
Area churches will sponsor youth entertainment this Saturday at 7 o'clock in the elementary cafeteria. Refreshments will be available from 7 to 7 30, followed by a screening of the Moody Bible Institute film The God of Cream. Parents are urged to bring their children for a wholesome evening of films and activities.
A group of youths aged 9 through 18 will leave Main Street Baptist Church by bus at 8 o clock Monday morning to attend the annual Youth Camp at Lake Lavon Baptist Encampment June 29 to July 2. Rev. Dan Hubbell and David Garrett will lead staff from Grand Saline. Hubbel is director, Garrett music director. Other area staff include Rev. Charles Richardson of First Baptist Canton as Camp Pastor and Rev. Ellis Morrison of Lone Oak teaching a Bible class. About 300 to 400 are expected to attend this year.
The First Church invites the public to a Sunday singing event this day June 22 at 2 pm. Local choirs from various areas are expected to participate and share songs. All are extended a welcome to attend.
Gospel meeting at Church of Christ scheduled June 23 to June 29 features preacher Op heter Thompson and others addressing God’s Plan for Salvation Your Soul. Fire reports include Grand Saline blaze June 10 and a car fire on Hwy 80 June 13. Also notes Grand Saline students Duke and Williams named to North Texas State University honor rolls.
Private Billy Ray Hall, a four month Vietnam veteran, is listed as a patient at the U S Naval Hospital in Guam after wounds received in Vietnam. He entered service in June 1968. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Alvin Jackson and his wife is Katie Gore of Fruitvale.
The First Evangelical Methodist Church invites all to an all-out Old Fashioned Singing on Sunday night June 22 at 7 30 led by Pastor BD L McDonald. The church welcomes everyone for an evening of fellowship and song. Joe Lide, Sun Printer Pressman for six years, is in Cozby Ger many Hospital and slated for surgery Thursday morning.
A familiar Morton Salt Company sign at the Grand Saline plant has been replaced with a new lamplike plastic design marking Morton International division. The firm claims inexhaustible local salt supply, with a 50 car expansion area laid out northeast of the existing level. The company recently merged with Norwich Pharmacal Company and now produces drugs and other products through Morton Chemical and Morton Quality Products.
Irma Rosella Duke, daughter of Mr and Mrs James W Duke of Route 1, earned the Bachelor of Arts in mathematics at North Texas State University during spring commencement on May 30. She will work in Grand Saline this summer and plans to start a Dallas job in the fall.
Mt Lebanon Baptist Church announces a revival week starting Sunday July 6 with guest preacher Bro D C Dunson of Scur ry replacing the earlier July 13 plan due to a family illness. Bro Bill Lane, pastor, notes watch the Sun for updates.
The 4 H Club of Grand La ine will sponsor wrestling matches Saturday night June 28 at 8 o clock in the Riding Club Arena. Fritz Von Er Baron Raschke Thunderbolt Patterson and Jose Lothario fight Dirty Dusty Rhodes and Gorilla Lopez with two other matches. Proceeds fund the club's project for next year. Tickets 2 50 ringside 2 00 1 50 general 1 for children under 12.
The Grand Saline Lions Club installed Gerald Gilbert as president with about 35 Lions and Lionesses at the Tuesday gathering. J C Rusche urged a productive year, a membership drive was announced, and officers including Rayford Williams and Odell Young were installed by A C Alford of Tyler. Vernon Moore reported a broom sale. guests included Mrs. Drake and Mrs. Bryant. dinner was served by the local Rebekah Lodge ladies.
Steven Hitt a senior from Shreveport Louisiana was honored by Northwestern State College at Natchitoches for the 1960 70 school year He was selected for Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges based on leadership and scholarship He served as president of Phi Mu Alpha and plans to be a high school band director after graduation
