Leroy Kirbys travels to New York City to assist in organizing the upcoming International Assembly of Jehovahs Witnesses at Yankee Stadium July 7 13 The event expected to draw about 80 000 for the main public talk features Bible dramas and reports from missionaries with 13 000 volunteers and 200 crafts in seven U S gatherings Kirbys prior ministry roles include district super ior in parts of Texas and Oklahoma and he travels with his wife Betty returning there after the assembly
The area youth night is set for Saturday June 14 from 7 to 9 PM in the elementary cafeteria. The SRA will offer refreshments at start, followed by Main Street Baptist Church youth singing directed by David Garrett, then a concession sale and a color film God of Creation. Cooperating churches include Grand Saline Bible Church Corinth Baptist Church First Church Nazarene and Main Street Baptist Church inviting all school age youths to attend.
First Baptist Church will start a week of revival from June 16 to 22 with cottage prayer services each night. Bro Harold Brunson will deliver the 10 and 7:20 p.m. messages from Everett, Griffin directing music. The revival marks W F Smith's last week at the church before becoming a missionary to Alberta Canada.
The First Assembly of God in Grand Saline held its annual business meeting on Sunday evening June 8. New card members were elected and a pastor was chosen every two years. The pastor Rev. F. B. Kennedy and his wife were extended a call to remain for the next two years.
Reports on the 1969 Grand Saline Rodeo say crowds were good for all three nights and the show ran smoothly. The Texas Prison Rodeo Band boosted thrills while cash prizes of 2.50, 5.00, 5.00 and 10.00 were offered across events. Harvey Kimmey won an Admiral Television prize on Saturday night as Grand Saline locals anticipate an even bigger event next year.
Two Morton Salt employees, B Burrow and Clais Whatley, receive tenth anniversary service pins after ten years of employment since June 1 1959. The design features a large M top with an umbrella girl and a swinging wreath inscribed Morton International Inc.
The F B Kennedys will attend the North Texas District Council of the Assemblies of God in Austin starting June 16 at Memorial Auditorium. A Youth Rally will lead to an ordination service Thursday night. Grand Saline's D Le Boyles and family will attend. 4,000 to 5,000 expected, with 540 churches represented by pastors and delegates. Uncle Luck Adkins of Grand Saline is hospitalized in Tyler, in poor condition.
The Journeymen Quartet will perform Friday night at Bible Baptist Church with Bro H Willmon preaching. The revival runs through June 19 with services each evening at 7 20. Gene Sant of Bedford and his mother Mrs Pauline Jackson visited on Saturday.
Ernest Burges of the Van Zandt County Vegetable Growers Association and others spent a week surveying fields with praise for better weather and outlook. They plan to start packing by June 16 with 20 to 23 workers, shipping mainly to Michigan and Brandaps, with about 65 acres in play and 50 to 60 crates sold locally. The group notes South Texas yields were short due to heavy rain, but overall quality and price outlook remain strong.
A Saturday night two car collision three miles north of Alba killed three area youths. Victims were E L Kahl 20, Tony Hudgins 14, and Benny Bohannon 15. Others injured included Vicki Owens 14 and Arthur Owens 18. The wreck occurred on US 67 at 1:40 pm June 7. Sherman Sherwood 16 and Bohannon 15 were in one car with others in the second. Funeral services were held for Jimmy Chiafos and Benny Bohannon. Burial followed in local cemeteries under Wilson Funeral Home. Community church appointments and local sermons also noted.
Grand Saline city council met Tuesday night June 10 at 7. R B Bud Davidson was appointed Street Commissioner for an indefinite period. Arlee LaPrade was appointed to fill the one year unexpired term of W Don Adams, confirmed at the June meeting. A Longview firm representative discussed reflective street signs to be installed at High and Main, with additional demonstrative signs to follow.
Churches and Masonic lodges join a national movement to send a petition to NASA before the moon landing. The effort opposes Mrs. Madilyn Murry who seeks to abolish prayer schools and space aid. A petition at Grand Saline’s First National Bank, led by Woodrow Justin, urges signatures to support continuing national prayer and Bible guidance. The petition stays at the bank until June 0.
