Local merchants sponsor Christmas Eve prize drawing

Grand Saline firms donate gifts for a December 24 drawing at 4 p.m. The Sun will publish the full prize list next week. Donors include Bill Hawkins Used Furniture with a rocking chair, Gibson Motor Co with antifreeze, Western Auto with a clock radio, and First National Bank with ten dollars in prizes among many others.

Funeral Services Held For J. L. Granny Ray

J L Granny Ray 90 died Tuesday after a short illness in Grand Saline. A longtime resident from Louisiana and retired railroad man, he was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church. Funeral held at Creacleville Methodist Church with Rev Conatser and Rev Buckingham officiating. Burial Creacleville Cemetery. Pallbearers named. Survived by son O L Ray of Grand Saline, two daughters Mrs Tom Sloan and Mrs Rena Nichols, four grandchildren, six great grandchildren.

New City Water Now Supplied by Two New Wells

Grand Saline water superintendent L. A. Simmons reports two new water wells are supplying all city water. He notes the water will taste slightly softer and flatter but the analysis confirms it is perfectly safe for drinking.

Galloway Darby conducted a survey of Grand Saline firms about extended hours for Friday and Saturday evenings. Several agreed to stay open until 7 p m on Friday December 22 and until 8 p m on Christmas Eve Saturday December 24 for public convenience.

Soil and Water Conservation Loans Discussed in Canton Area

An December 9 meeting at Arch Martin’s farm near Canton reviewed soil building efforts and loan options. George Yates and Andy Gualitt led a discussion on loans from Farmers Home Administration to fund terraces, waterways, ponds, brush removal, pastures, wells, land leveling and irrigation equipment under Soil Conservation Service guidance.

The Grand Saline Nazarene Church will present The Star Still Shines by Pearl Neilson on Monday night December 19 at 7 30. A Christmas tree will be on display and the public is invited. Helicopters Land Near Ranch Motel in Grand Saline

An Army Air Force captain and a lieutenant piloting two Bell helicopters from Fort Worth circled Grand Saline on Wednesday and landed in a vacant lot beside the Ranch Motel. After lunch they departed for their Alabama base.

Postmaster predicts a record pre holiday mail surge as Grand Saline office will be open all day December 17 until 6 pm and until noon on December 24 for public convenience. Silver Lake Deep Test Site Staked Near Mineola

A reported 8 000 foot wildcat test stake was driven last Friday southeast of the Silver Lake store on the M H Landers tract southwest of 22g acres. Phillips Petroleum Co is said to be interested in the well. Drilling may start early next year about three miles southwest of the Nolan Edward Field and west of Mineola.

Don Horton Killed In Auto Accident In San Antonio

Reverend Don Horton a Nazarene pastor in San Antonio died Tuesday afternoon in an auto crash. His wife Marie Knight daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Knight of Grand Saline accompanied by relatives left for San Antonio. Hortons body expected to reach Grand Saline Thursday night with funeral planned for Friday.

Townsite oil drilling advances in Alba area

L. D. Cuerin and R. L. Gibson of Longview drill the first Alba townsite well since 1949 on G. M. Williams six acre tract. Location is 150 feet east and 142 feet north within the Jason Sherman survey. A shallow wildcat well was drilled two miles northwest of Van at the Devon Ledgc Oils and Fort Worth Oil Co No 1 Swin ney estate. The test showed non commercial flow as it reached 1 851 feet in the Nacatoch formation.

Grants to Texas Hospitals and Colleges Highlight Ford Foundation List

The Ford Foundation released grants totaling over six and a half million dollars to Texas hospitals and colleges. Corby Germany Hospital in Tyler received 10,300 dollars, with several other Texas facilities named among the recipients. Miss Lillie Hawkins Passes Away at Home

Miss Lillie Hawkins of Fruitvale, longtime Van Zandt County public school teacher, died December 9 at her home. She was 64 years old. Services were held at Creagleville Methodist Church with Rev. E. E. Anders and Rev. Walter Gibbs officiating. Burial followed in Creagleville Cemetery. She is survived by her brother W. J. Hawkins Jr. and two nephews Bob Hawkins and Donald Hawkins.

Big Day Planned By Main Street Baptists

Rev. Howard Conatser of Main Street Baptist Church outlines a big day for the Lord on Sunday December 18 with a Sunday school goal of 300 and average attendance around 250. Department superintendents are listed and Training Union aims for 150 with plans to reach it.
