Merchants Plan Christmas Eve Prize Draw

A Tuesday night meeting at Firemens Hall chaired by C A Mayfield discussed Christmas Eve events. Merchants will donate prizes for a daytime draw and submit firm names and prizes to The Sun for publication next week.

Services Held Tuesday For Randall Howard

Funeral services were held in McKinney for Randall Howard brother of Mrs. Bill Bass of Grand Saline. He was a native of Coffee County and died Saturday night in Dallas from a heart attack. Survivors include his daughter Betty Daniel one grandson Darrell Daniel his mother Mrs. C. L. Howard and four brothers.

Wesleyan Service Guild Holds Christmas Theme Meeting

The Wesleyan Service Guild met at the Chapel of the First Methodist Church with a Christmas program led by Mrs. Bill Carter. Members donated gifts for a needy family to form a Christmas basket, while readings and songs accompanied by piano, and stories “Round John” and “The Christmas Donkey” were shared.

Donald J. Indian Masterson resigns as Grand Saline Police Chief to pursue the Van Zandt County Sheriff race. The resignation becomes effective December 31.

Eastern Star to Meet Next Monday Night

The Grand Saline Eastern Star will hold a meeting Monday night at 7:80. All members are urged to attend this session and participate in the Christmas party activities.

Grand Saline Invited to Fort Worth Stock Show Day

Grand Saline has been extended an invitation to spend a day at the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show in Fort Worth. W. R. Watt writes the Chamber of Commerce praising past cooperation and noting that last year nearly 100 cities and organizations participated with delegations, cowgirl sweet hearts, bands and riding clubs adding color and aiding the show. Dates are Friday January 27 through Sunday February 5.

Mattie Bell to Speak At All District Banquet

Mattie Bell is scheduled as guest speaker at the All District Banquet in Athens at 7 30 p m in the Youth Building. School superintendents, principals, coaches, and district players will attend to honor the All District team, the Athens High School champion, the second team and honorable mention players.

County 4-H Council Plans Xmas Party

The Van Zandt County 4-H Council met Saturday with 16 4-H members and leaders to plan the county Christmas party at the American Legion Hut in Canton on December 19 at 7 p.m. Gifts will go to a crippled children’s hospital in Dallas. Committees for decoration, refreshments, and recreation were named. Adult leaders are asked to bring two dozen cookies or one dozen cupcakes.

Cotton Allocation Vote Set for 1956 Upland Cotton

Cotton growers in Van Zandt County vote next Tuesday December 13 to approve or reject marketing quotas for the 1956 upland cotton crop. A two thirds yes vote triggers quotas with penalties for excess cotton and full parity price supports. a disapproval means no quotas but 50 percent parity supports. All 1955 cotton producers may vote at listed county polling places 9 am to 6 pm.

County ACP Extends 1955 Planting and Funding Changes

Due to drought farmers gain extend deadline to December 21 1955 for winter cover crops and dealers will honor orders without changing expiration dates. An extra 35000 in 1955 ACP funds allows lifts in stock tank limits to 2500 cubic yards and limestone use up to 80 percent of land while applications for pasture, stock tanks, terraces and cover crops remain open until January 1 1956.

The Grand Saline High School Band earned a Second Division rating in the Double AA class at the Region IV Interscholastic League Marching Band Contest in New London. Winners praised the judging shift this year as challenging for many bands.

Carpenter to retire as Silver Lake postmaster

The Silver Lake post office will close December 31 and patrons will move to Rural Route 4 from Grand Saline. Postmaster Hugo Carpenter retires after 30 years in service. Officials estimate about $2000 in annual savings. Carpenter also ran a neighboring store and is a noted merchant active in agriculture and local civic groups.

Services Held For Mrs Laura B Brooks

Funeral services for Mrs Laura Brooks of Grand Saline were held December 6 at Partley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev G B Carter and Rev Austin Denny officiating. Burial followed in Creagleville Cemetery. She was born August 30 1866 in Creagleville and married Dillard Brooks February 25 1885. Her husband died about 12 years later. She belonged to the Main Street Christian Church at the time of her death.

Local Study Club Chili Supper Nets Funds for Williams Fund

The Grand Saline Study Club hosted a chili supper at the Fire Hall raising over 40 dollars for the Kenneth Williams fund. Finance chairmen and members led the event then hosted meetings, and the club voted to become an Employment Placement Center for high school students in 1956.

Ordinance Bans Fireworks in Grand Saline City Limits

The measure passed last January prohibits selling fireworks within Grand Saline city limits. It also bans shooting fireworks in, on, or across any alley. Mayor Jim York says sales outside the city remain unaffected and urges cooperation to reduce past nuisances.

Highway Department Plans Road Improvements for 1956

The Texas Highway Commission approves a 1956 work program to protect state roads by widening and strengthening pavement, bridge work, and resurfacing. In Van Zandt County five Farm Road seal coat projects cover 40 miles. A project replaces 18 creosoted timber bridges on State Highway 198 between Canton and Mahank with concrete at an estimated $60,000. Work on 18 miles of U S Highway 80 includes widening resurfacing at about $206,000.

Tyler congressman Brady Gentry made a Grand Saline visit Monday meeting old friends from Colfax county roots. He formerly worked as a bookkeeper in Gyend Saline cotton gins and stopped by The Sun office during the trip.

New News Editor Named for Sun

A H Maxey former Copperas Cove Courier owner and Four County Press publisher begins as news editor of The Sun in Grand Saline. He will assist publisher Neil Harle and lead local news while Alf Roberson remains advertising manager and handles national ads and business duties. Maxey comes from Jacksboro and urges public cooperation to speed news submission for early publication.
