G R Milling of Glen Rose is reported dead after a Hamilton county man fired a double barreled shotgun at Milling in Glen Rose. The fatal wound struck his throat, arm and shoulder and Milling died Wednesday night. He ran a local sanitarium drawing visitors to Glen Rose.
Tom Long reported to the office that boll weevils found in his field harmed his crop. The insects exceed normal size with long bills capable of piercing bolls. He planned to pick a bale per acre but the weevils reduced yield by about three fourths. Weevils are abundant countywide this year and may be seedborne.
Eugene Thompson of Southwestern Paper Co in Dallas notes market shifts with a norther affecting lint prices, cents per hundred on bagging and tied goods. The report mentions high-quarters shoes coats and the Graham Gin Co revival, reflecting regional trade activity.
Fire destroyed the residence of John H. Wood in east Graham shortly after midnight. No one was in the building. Pat Wood his wife and baby and his parents were in Mineral Wells. The fire started in a lower room and spread to the upper floor. No stove fire that day. origin unknown. Little household goods were saved and the loss was partially insured.
Mrs W T Steadham and her daughter Maggie on the Murray Route killed two large diamond rattlesnakes in their garden on Wednesday. Maggie spotted the first snake under vines while gathering peas, and mother and daughter killed a second coiled serpent nearby. Each snake measured over five feet, one with twelve rattles and the other with eleven.
The program features leader Mrs Hudson guiding discussion on mission work and service. A song titled Somebody Needs You is included and scripture reading comes from Galatians 6 verses 6 through 10.
The State of Texas vs Cleve Barnes dominated the week in district court. Barnes, convicted previously for selling liquor, was retried, found guilty again, and sentenced to two years. A motion for a new trial was overruled and an appeal filed. Barnes remains out on bond with sixty days to file statements of facts and assignments of errors.
City council accepted a joint proposal to install a new fire alarm network. Thirty boxes will be placed across six wards with bells at fire stations and a light plant indicator showing ward numbers. The system, independent of telephone exchanges, should be ready by mid next month.
At a Thursday meeting of the Les Hiboux Club guests announced the engagement of Will F. Evans of Valente Texas to Miss Allie Logan. The event featured wedding march, pink decor, score cards with monogram E L and gifts for the bridal party.
The Band concert planned for tomorrow night in Court House Park is postponed due to a protracted meeting. It will be held one week from tomorrow night on October 2. This will be the last outdoor concert of the season.
The Presbyterian Ladies Aid and Missionary Society held their semi monthly meeting at Mrs. B. B. Garrett's home with thirteen members present. Mrs. R. A. Duncan led devotional exercises and roll calls referenced The Missionary Survey. A. Hudson led a lesson from At Our Own Door stressing active missionary work and plans for Southern Presbyterian missions. The group closed with the Lord's Prayer and will meet again October 1 at Mrs. Hudson's.
The Rev. B. F. Stallings visits Bowie this week and will return in time for Sunday worship. He is expected to lead services and return to his regular duties afterward.
The report names numerous attendees including Miss Lillian Manning and Miss Bladen Garrett along with Mesdames M. K. Graham and F. F. Parrish. Other guests include Mr. Chas Hutchison and Mr. Horace Tidwell joined by residents from Jackshoro and McKinney.
