A large crowd gathered Monday for a traditional Trades Day. People from all areas mingled in a lively market atmosphere as cotton sold for seven cents and horse traders attracted buyers. A cold north wind and recent rain highlighted the need for fall and winter goods from local dry goods merchants.
Miss Annis Clark of Archer City underwent an appendicitis operation at Beckham Sanitarium on Tuesday October 6. The procedure was very successful and she was moved yesterday to the home of her cousin Dr. H E Griffin in east Graham for recovery.
Obituaries report the death of G A Posern aged 84 at his Graham residence and burial at Oak Grove Cemetery. Mrs S R Crawford dies in Belton after a life of church service and charitable work. County tax rolls show total property value of 7,922,460 with taxes of 111,258.22 and details on state county school and poll taxes, plus rail and telephone company property values and miles of road in the county.
A 1914 notice from Young County Health Officer J L Williamson informs R E Lynch of Beckham National Bank Graham that quarantine restrictions on stock moving between Stephens County and Young County have been removed with no further restrictions in effect. The communication confirms the policy change and offers assurance to authorities and merchants.
The Commissioners Court ordered an election to be held with the general election in Precinct No. 6 covering Proffitt and Newcastle to decide if pool halls and similar establishments can operate there.
The body of J R Jameson was found on the Fort Worth and Denver tracks near the freight depot in Wichita Falls at 6 30 PM. He had both arms severed and the details of the accident are unavailable. Jameson recently worked in the Electra oil fields and had long home ties to Graham.
The two year old child of Mr and Mrs Charlie Yarborough died of blood poisoning from a foot sore at her grandparents home in West Graham at 8 o clock last night. She was taken to town for treatment yesterday afternoon but the disease could not be checked. She was buried in Oak Grove cemetery this afternoon. The Leader extends sympathy to the bereaved.
Mr and Mrs D C McClatchy of Olney attended the funeral of Mrs Crawford on Sunday marking a quiet farewell in the community.
John Crutchfield was found unconscious along the Graham and Farmer road near the Steen place about 11am last Tuesday. His forehead was badly crushed with skull fragments exposed. He was brought to town, treated by the family physician, and operations removed bone splinters. Doctors say recovery looks unlikely after a mule kicked him during the ride.
Bible School at 9 45 with Minister B F Stallings and Superintendent H L Tidwell. Preaching at 11 a m and 7 30 p m. Next Sunday focuses on History and Teachings of the Christian Church. All members urged to attend and visitors welcome. Official board meets Sunday at 2 at W L Tidwell’s house for important business.
