Graham High School held off Decatur High 6 to 0 as a first half interception return for a touchdown stood as the only score. Decorated by a promising new lineup, Graham eyes Electra next with Burkburnett looming later, planning a strong home crowd and improved play.
The Chautauqua Club of C. L. C. held its first meeting yesterday with fourteen members present and Mrs. T. M. Binnion presiding. Members donated books to the library, discussed minutes, and approved thanks to J. R. Ramsey for ice cream sale funds and to Mr. and Mrs. Morrison for hosting the teachers reception. Mrs. Z. A. Hudson spoke as president, and a roundtable on Virginia in the nation’s building followed led by Mrs. Milton Snoddy. The next meeting will be at Mrs. D. H. Bolin’s on November 14.
The Wednesday Club met at Henley Apartments West Second street hosted by Mrs Glenn Dyer Prizes awarded included a hand embroidered lunch cloth for Mrs W E Ashford a linen bridge cover for Mrs W Z Allen and a guest towel for Mrs Harold Hubbard The room featured cut flowers Refreshments Banana pie with whipped cream and coffee were served to Mesdames H L Hollister W W Carson W H Dyer W Z Allen C E Beavers Harold Hubbard D E Stimson I K Parker C E Humphrey J A Ross W E Ashford and W F Caldwell
Mrs W V Dye and family were called to Graford last Friday when a message said Mrs Brown had suffered a painful injury. She was resting somewhat better when they returned Sunday.
Following a recent election Oklahoma voters approved a measure allowing the legislature to meet on its own call. Governor Walton has summoned a special session for October 11 to push an anti Klan law and then resign, while legislators prepare to challenge his official acts and possible impeachment.
Thousands gathered last Saturday for the free distribution of 750 dollars in prizes. Winners include J. M. Roberts Cedar Creek 250 dollars Miss Hattie Cambern Graham 100 dollars and several 10 dollar prizes. The Retail Merchants Association of Graham plans another 750 dollars in prizes on November 17 hoping for the largest turnout yet.
Mrs. L. E. Norman hosted a birthday party last Friday for her daughter Lucile at her South Oak Street home. Guests from Lucile's Sunday School class enjoyed conversation, games, a dinner with fried chicken and salads, then watched Lawful Larceny at the Rex Theatre before serenading. Attendees included Gladys Fowler, Elizabeth Morrison, Mary Louise Hallam, Rose Amra Reed, Mattie Queen Price, Dorothy Hudson, Willie George, Zell Baynes, and Ada Lee Price, chaperoned by Mr. and Mrs. William Stepp.
W F Robinson and many relatives and friends from Jean attended the funeral for M C Robinson who died after a pistol shot Sunday morning following an incident in Jean on Saturday afternoon. The mourners included J E Robinson Padgett W P Robinson S W Cobb Mrs Amanda Robinson and others from Wichita Falls.
Steve Magee, 37, of Electra, died Sunday morning when the truck he drove overturned near Olney, pinning him beneath timber. He self-identified to rescuers, saying he was not seriously hurt, but died of a hemorrhage after the weight was removed. Survived by widow, a 13-year-old daughter, and two brothers, with funeral services in Electra.
Mr A B Eddleman director of the live stock division at Young County Fair says stock men are filing applications as time runs short for the November 8 to 10 event. Entries across all departments must be filed by November 8. This week J G Crow listed one Hereford bull four years old one Hereford calf under a year and two pigs under a year. J C Butler listed one Jersey bull over a year and two Jersey cows over. Eddleman expects many more in the final days.
The Graham Music Club met at First Methodist church for its inaugural regular gathering. Officers allowed continued use of the church venue. Members shared German music knowledge and performed piano, vocal, and violin solos led by Mrs. R. A. Duncan with programs by Mrs. J. C. Lovelace.
Mrs. A. A. Kaberle and her son Jack visit the city as guests of Mrs. J. C. Bower. Mr. Kaberle formerly served as ticket agent for the Rock Island in this city.
Mr A W Kay came back Sunday from Battle Creek Michigan after a very serious operation and some minor procedures. He improves slowly and will be months before he can resume active community work. Kay has long served on many committees and given valued service. Friends welcome his return and wish him a swift recovery. Mrs Kay returned last week.
Dr C R Taylor pastor of Graham Baptist Church joined a Dallas Tuesday meeting to discuss church affairs and community outreach with local clergy and civic leaders.
Graham progresses with square paving as weather cooperates. Work resumes on completion around the square and a 25 foot strip to the courtyard fence, with a 50 foot graveled separation. Elm Street paving proposed from the square to First Street and to the union station. Fourth Street graveled from the square to Salt Creek bridge. gravel aiding maintenance.
In Graham the Ivan community displayed two white face Hereford calves joined at the hips. Born nearly two years ago, they were mounted by a taxidermist for over a year and will tour fairs. From the front they resemble two calves, though one hind leg is missing. The sight evokes Siamese twins as seen in popular tales.
The Rev. Frank H. Stedman of Cisco met with Arch Deacon Harry L. Virden to discuss improvements to the Graham church. Plans include material upgrades and moving from occasional services to weekly Sunday services. The public is invited. Stedman will be in Graham Sunday October 28 for morning and evening services.
Members wishing to enter the state contest in short stories essays or poetry must have manuscripts to the literary chairman by November 1. Manuscripts limited to 2000 words and typed on one side. Mrs Buchanan offers an extra prize of 10 dollars for best club constitution.
Mr and Mrs Carroll Dickenson visited Mr and Mrs Preston Dicken son in Stephens County on Sunday, sharing time with the family and stopping by their home in the county community.
The Humble Oil & Refining Company and Texas Company set new posted crude prices boosting 39 gravity to 1.50 a barrel, a near 50 percent rise. Other firms are expected to follow as markets reopen after a lull, with various grades priced from 90 cents to 1.50 per barrel depending on gravity.
Prominent oilman M C Robinson died Sunday morning from a shooting in his pasture near Jean after a Saturday incident. His son Jim Robinson was jailed after an examining trial. authorities await grand jury action. Family disputes preceded the tragedy and two other sons were present during the shooting.
Mrs. W. G. Crump and her daughter from Calumet Oklahoma are in Graham to oversee business interests. Crump left Graham thirty seven years ago after her husband was killed in a county turkey hunt. She meets with a few old timers from the early days.
Mrs. C. Fox Clarke shared the story of Ann of Ava at the Baptist Church Sunday night before a large and appreciative audience. Her forceful presentation left a lasting impression on the packed house, and she urged that the tale be heard by people everywhere.
Mr and Mrs Nat Price spend the weekend in Cisco visiting Mrs McCarver, who is Mrs Price's sister.
Workmen completed grounds ordering for the Young County Fair to be held in Graham from November 8 to 10. An airship specialist and a large entertainment program are booked. Educational Day on November 9 promises a huge parade with free fair tickets for teachers and school children. Superintendent H. H. Avants leads the educational department.
Misses Zella and Beulah Allen hosted a miscellaneous bridge shower for Catherine Craig, soon to wed Dallas, Texas, Weatherford Touchstone. Six tables, prizes for high score Louise Graham and bride's contest winner Mrs Graham Stewart, gifts in a slipper, cake and sherbet served to a long list of guests.
Mr. R. E. Williams directs a new produce house in the Morrison building on the west side of the square two doors south of The Leader office. A branch of Witherspoon Produce Company of Wichita Falls, he has been in the territory about two months and now opens in this community. The stock will include apples oranges lemons and all seasonable fruits.
Miss Odessa Long will begin her school at Center Ridge on Monday, marking the start of a new term. The move places her at the local Center Ridge school, with parental and community support anticipated.
Mr G E Newell from Eliasville spent Tuesday in the city meeting residents and discussing local matters. He was seen at several downtown spots and spoke briefly with officials before returning home.
