Plans are laid for Monday March 6 to draw a huge crowd to Graham for a major trade and sales day. A double page ad in this issue explains the event, with $600 in prizes and a chicken lottery tied to five dollar orders.
Memphis on February 11 W A Johnson former lieutenant governor and state senator formally announced his candidacy for the democratic nomination. He edits the Hall County Herald and has long resided in the area. Johnson notes opposition to mob law yet endorses Klan work in several communities.
Capt J H Long serves as president and A Lee Boyd as cashier guiding the South Bend Bank which opens with 25000 capital and 50000 bonded to safeguard deposits. The town, without a bank for months, welcomes the new institution despite Chartering hurdles for a Guaranty Fund bank.
Graham grows as Wm Johnson opens the Johnson tract in East Graham for residential lots. Johnson, an longtime county resident, moved from the city center years ago to raise poultry and pigs and now edges the expanding town.
The Sunflower Minstrel performs Friday night at the school auditorium and again Saturday night at the Majestic Theatre. Local audiences are invited to attend both performances.
Floy V. Hinson submitted his resignation as Young County Attorney to the Commissioners' Court citing inadequate pay and heavy county criminal work that limits his civil practice. John B. Rhea, local attorney, was appointed to fill the unexpired term and has announced his candidacy for the office in July.
Floy Black, 24, died Monday evening at a local sanitarium after stomach complications. He had just eaten and suffered a burst stomach following an operation. He was visiting his sister at the time and his body was shipped to Truscott for burial.
H. C. Harris, living with his daughter Mrs. Sam Allen on West Street, remains very low after a prolonged illness that has persisted for some time.
The Graham Band performs every Saturday and on the second Monday giving concerts that attract large crowds. The Chamber of Commerce backs the band with civic support and aims to build Graham into a top band, with Judge Walker aiding the effort and Secretary Walker coordinating outreach.
Sheriff J W Saye arrested eleven people yesterday in South Bend on charges including drunkenness vagrancy larceny and possession of liquor. Jail records list Chemical May Louise Ruhl Daisy Wilman Ira Summers Eva Summers and Ted Harrel among those lodged. Harrel also faces federal warrants. Sheriff Saye calls for tips to curb organized crime and asks for assistance from County Attorney John B. Rhea to dispose of the cases.
The Parsons No. 1 Barnes Production Company has produced gas at 2570 feet for days and may extend the Banger pool. If the Barnes well hits, it would extend the producing level 1.25 miles north and bring output within six miles of Graham. The Herron No. 1 at 2389 feet now seems a separate pool with Lisle No. 1 nearby.
W. E. Moren has opened a casing crew office at the Commerce Hotel in Graham. An experienced casing man, he has worked in the Breckenridge field and is familiar with Young county conditions. He offers to handle any casing proposition and employs only skilled workmen.
Officials intensified efforts against illicit distilleries in Young County seizing four stills and gallons of whiskey at the Norris place southwest of Graham after a Saturday raid. A Sunday raid at the French place north of Graham yielded more liquor and two men. Federal agents from Wichita Falls arrived early this week to take custody of the suspects and liquor.
President Harding praised Judge George D. Alden after hearing his lectures twice. Alden, a Massachusetts jurist and noted lecturer, will speak February 22 at the high school auditorium, with Harding calling his works bold, uplifting, and beautifully phrased.
H C Fields visited town last Saturday during a bright spring day. At 77 he remains cheerful despite two years of feeble health and throat trouble that has prevented solid food. He could not leave his car, but many friends called, recalling his long service to the county and community uplift.
The K P Lodge in Graham announces a big celebration next Tuesday night marking the orders 58th anniversary. Local boys will join in the observance and the second degree will be conferred at the meeting.
The Sunflower Minstrel debuts in Olney this evening with manager J H Buchanan reporting readiness for the county’s best minstrel yet. The company, formed of local American Legion and Graham Band members, performs Friday night at the school auditorium and Saturday night at the Majestic Theatre, under director J M Burkett. The troupe promises laughter to lift blues and urges all Graham and Young County residents to attend.
The Graham Chamber of Commerce in its Tuesday meeting called on Secretary Walker to cooperate with the Civic League to advance civic interests. The Leader supports joint efforts to beautify the city, plant trees, and plan summer work, urging wide citizen involvement and sustained cooperation with the ladies’ beautification drive at Shawnee Park.
Street and Company will open a new Bargain Balcony department at the store. The department is planned to be ready Saturday February 25 with a bargain daily. Mr Street has just returned from markets and promises sought after bargains for ladies in Graham.
J H Davis once called Cyclone announced his candidacy for Texas First Congressional District opposing Eugene Black. Davis, a veteran of about 1500 joint debates and a Populist leader, served one term as Texas at large congressman during World War I era and later backed the prohibition movement.
Eighteen months into South Bend and nearby pools, oil activity rises with more than 100 wells in South Bend and about sixty in the Bunger pool. New tests are planned across Graham area as several companies brace for rapid development and potential new territory additions to Young county fields.
R G Taylor brought a half bushel of turnips to The Leader office on Monday and urged others to raise gardens. He claimed Mrs Taylor and the children do most of the work while he helps with plowing, noting he has plowed nearly forty gardens this spring.
G L Majors is reported ill with lagrippe this week causing absence from duties. No other details are provided about the illness or related impacts.
