J H Fisher of the Leader will tour Young county speaking to boys about forming a Boys Corn Club. Meetings are scheduled in Rocky Mound Connor Creek Salem Heavy Chapel Red Top Indiana Mound Miller Bend Olney and Graham with a large countywide gathering set for January 1913 in Graham where Hon Tom Marks will outline the program and a permanent Young county unit will be formed. The Leader and Semi Weekly Dal News offer a one year home and foreign news package for $1.75.
At 12 30 P M Saturday Joe McCarson a weigher at No 4 mine was crushed between the cage and the shaft edge while oiling cages. He suffered painful injuries but none broken or internal. Dr Mars of Newcastle and Dr Hamilton of Olney treated him at Arlington Hotel and he was reported improving.
The Gulf Texas and Western Railway Company began laying track on the line from Jacksboro to Mineral Wells, linking with the Mineral Wells and Northwestern railway. Ties are laid along the right of way and work is expected to proceed quickly. All materials for the road are in the yards at Jacksboro.
Rev J Hall Bowman pastor of the Methodist church is invited to preach at the Agricultural and Mechanical College next Sunday. He will leave for the college on Friday. Rev B A Snoddy will occupy the Methodist pulpit in his absence. All are urged to attend.
R I Fawks of Murray was in town last week to conduct business and visit his parents Mr and Mrs J J Fawks. Bob with his younger brother Bruce paid the Leader a call Saturday.
For years Young County observes the second Monday each month as Trades Day a reunion and market. The Leader notes Big Monday draws people from across the country to Graham for stock trading merchants visiting the Leader office and horse swapping. Children see old friends and former schoolmates, while locals preserve the tradition and hope to keep the date. Banquet honors officers of Graham Methodist Church with a seven course dinner at the parsonage and toasts to the church ministry and community leaders.
The Carnival on the west side of the Square attracts fair crowds with the flying jenny as the main children’s attraction. Weather threat eased and is expected to stay clear for the rest of the week.
W L Howry transfers the Wagon Yard operations in Gra ham to Luther Herrington who took charge Monday morning. Howry is described as a friendly man who built a strong local patronage for the yard.
Miss Ruth Rogers, a former Graham teacher, greeted the Graham teachers as they arrived at the depot in Fort Worth on Thursday.
The fourth Lyceum number under the W Co T A brings Gilbert At Lee Eldredge, impersonator and entertainer, to town. Ladies were notified by wire that Eldredge would appear tomorrow night December 6, instead of Saturday as planned. The Texas Teachers Association met in Fort Worth with about 2500 attendees, noting strong state interest and broad representation from Young County including County Superintendent B W King and Supt Edgar McLendon with staff.
Local office reports a prank last Friday night as onions and pecans were swapped in the show window for smaller onions and inferior pecans. They recall the gift onions from James M. Wood of Lakewood New Mexico and vow to lock doors to prevent repeats.
Thanksgiving morning union services drew a grateful crowd at the Methodist church. Rev. Bowman read scripture, Revs. Stalling and Taylor offered prayers, and Rev. Hall delivered a sermon on blessings and God’s favors. Mr. Neal led the special music with Faure’s Give Thanks and Sing.
Rev. D. Cook who led the Graham Mission is moved to Graham with his family. Many friends in the town are glad to see them back among the community.
