Henry Daniels, linked to the death of Miles Jones last week, was held in Newcastle last Saturday and released on a $3,000 bond. A sizable crowd from Graham attended the trial.
A Remington typewriter offered as part payment on an Oliver model. The machine is nearly new with a new two color ribbon and is advertised as capable of serving as well as any other machine. A bargain sale is suggested for buyers seeking a good deal.
Last Friday evening the Business Men's nine and the Firemen's Band nine met in a lively game at the park with the Band Boys winning 11 to 19. Spectators cheered as players made good plays and runs. The Band requests another game after the confusing turn of events and a later match suggesting a score around 89 to 18 in favor of the Men.
The Graham Public schools will open on Monday September 5 with grades occupying the same rooms as last year. Third and fourth grades in the old building, others in the new building. The board asks for patron cooperation to ensure a smooth opening and a successful year. the superintendent and teachers invite all interested to visit during the session.
C L Casey of Eliasville caught a buffalo fish weighing over forty pounds using only his hands. He was traveling toward Graham with Mr DeLong when fording the Brazos River at South Bend they spotted the fish in shallow water. Casey jumped from the rig and quickly captured the fish alive, bringing it to town.
R. E. Lynch traveled to Albany last Sunday taking Mrs. W. L. Nelson who is visiting Mrs. Lynch with him. They returned with D. G. Vick and family who had been in Albany for some time.
Work began yesterday on Graham water works filtering plant. It is to be the best available, costing 5000 dollars. Fifteen men, seven teams, and one traction engine are on site. Completion expected by October first. J B Hawley of Fort Worth holds the contract with Paul Orloop supervising the job.
J L Flint & Son sold their Graham store to John Gay who will take charge immediately. The new proprietor is praised as a top young businessman with years of local experience and worthy of community confidence. The retiring firm is lauded for honest dealing and a strong trade, with hopes they will reopen in Graham.
Ed McClusky from the Clear Fork near South Bend said a good rain fell Thursday morning. He fears the showers may arrive too late to aid caution measures for local fields and crops.
Mrs C E Allen died in Bridgeport on July 30 after a prolonged illness. She had suffered health problems for years and the family had moved to Bridgeport hoping for improvement. A devout member of the Missionary Baptist Church for over twenty five years, she leaves a husband and several children.
The Christian church holds a tent meeting on the east side of the square with Rev. C. F. Pearce preaching each night. Large crowds attend, sermons well received, and interest grows daily. Singing is a highlighted feature praised as the best yet in town.
The county board of examiners will meet in the New School building in Graham Texas on Friday and Saturday September 2 and 3 to examine applicants for teachers certificates. All applicants should arrive early each morning as the examination requires lengthy writing time.
On Sabbath morning all pastors preached in their pulpits except the Christian church whose tent meeting began at 8:15. Subject themes included The Other Side The Straight and Narrow Gate and What the Bible Says about Consecration. Special solo by Miss Morrison and union youth service on the Methodist lawn led by Archie Owens. Evening services featured The Wages of Sin Is Death and The Bible as an Inspired Book with a large audience and choir. One daily 8:15 p.m. service announced.
W. J. Sanders, a leading progressive farmer in Loving County, notes recent rains have helped his cotton prospects though he believes better results are possible next year. He mentions growing maize and some corn but will need to buy feed for the next crop.
A band concert is canceled at the park tomorrow night due to illness and members being out of town. A concert is planned for one week from tomorrow night with new selections the band has just received.
