Civic League committees organize Shawnee Park Jubilee at Shawnee Park Friday night September 7 to raise funds for park improvements. Prices set for sandwiches cake ice cream coffee punch and candy with all proceeds for the park and music by the high school band.
Rev. T. R. Paden assisted by Rev. Jess Hill Garrett of San Angelo conducts a revival at Indian Mound ten miles north of Graham. Large crowds attend, with strong interest, as Garrett delivers forceful sermons and invites Graham residents to attend.
The United S 0 0 F and Rebekahs Association of West Texas held a two day session in Graham. Attendance lagged due to heat. Officers elected include M T Nelms Jacksboro president Annie Meaders Olney 1st vice pres W E Steele Olney 2nd vice president W E Steele index secretary Jacksboro G W Lucas Jacksboro treasurer Jacksboro D M Ward Olney chaplain. Next session set for Archer City August 1924.
Mr and Mrs Carroll Dickenson relocate from Oil City to Graham this week after buying the PD E Thompson residence on East Fourth Street. Mr Dickenson previously managed the Ford plant in Oil City and now works with LeSage Motor Company.
Graham lauds vacation end and announces the opening date of September 3 for the schools. It lists the new faculty, including high school principal C F Whitney and other teachers for high and grade schools, noting the new principal holds an M A from Texas Christian University and many staff have college degrees.
Rains reported across Texas but Graham stays in the dry column. Light showers on Saturday and Wednesday brought little moisture. Temperature drops follow recent heavy heat, aiding comfort. Cotton prospects remain bleak with potential short crops. some sandy farms may yield fair results. Stock water shortages persist as tanks still feel June rains.
Mrs Eddleman entertained a party of friends and relatives Friday night at 812 Virginia Street. Elder J. H. Fisher of Newcastle was in the city last week to supervise printing of the Primitive Baptist Church annual convention minutes held earlier this month. The pamphlet offers valuable information and church history.
A large family gathering at Shawnee Park on August 15 honored Mr. and Mrs. T H Woolley of Weatherford Texas, early county settlers. The event featured forty pounds of chicken with sides, games, and an ice cream course, hosting relatives and friends from Weatherford Finns Fort Worth and local families.
Elmer Calvin son of A J Calvin of Markley is named a major in the cadet corps at the A and M College of Texas for the coming year. He graduated Graham High School three years ago and earned the honor through scholarship discipline military bearing leadership and physical fitness.
Mr A D Moore of Flint Creek brings samples of Spur feterita and kafir corn, claiming they are unusually fine for the dry year. He believes the feed could be raised locally every year with proper farming planning and effort.
J. T. Ball, seven years old, son of Mr and Mrs E M Ball of Indianaa Mound, died after being kicked in the face by a family pony. He was playing with other boys when the pony kicked while hitched to a small cart. He suffered and was taken to a sanitarium where he died about 7 PM. Funeral services are to be held at Indian Mound at 2 30 PM.
The tourist park reports a busy week with eighteen cars registered by Mr. McDonald and seventy nine passengers. Registered visitors include T. H. Woolley Weatherford C. L. Smith Leonard L. F. Hurst Archer City C Abbott Nevada Mrs. M. A. Hodges Loving Henry Angle Breckenridge George Ford Breckenridge J. S. Watson Okemah Oklahoma and others from Electra Rowena Abilene Breckenridge Weatherford Waco Dallas and more.
The organizers prepare a program for an impromptu athletic meet at the ball park tomorrow afternoon. A game between the American Legion and the DeMolays is planned. Races between I B Padgett and E S Cusenbary may feature a dispute over distance. Curtis Dickenson may race a horse. Proceeds benefit the high school.
Interest in the Sunday School Baseball League rises as Baptists lead by a small edge while Methodists and Presbyterians are tied and Christians trail by one game. If Christians beat the Baptists today a three-way tie could occur and the league nears closure with large crowds expected and funds in view.
The National Theatre curates a lineup of major films for Graham including The Birth of a Nation in a revised form by D W Griffith followed by One Exciting Night and Robin Hood among others. The run marks a repeat of past strong attendance and broad audience appeal.
The Young County Baptist Association will convene Wednesday August 29 at Loving Baptist Church and continue through the week. Rev. G. W. Black, longtime moderator, plans to oversee proceedings in proper form as churches are urged to send strong representation.
Col Louis C Perry district governor of Lions Clubs in Texas and New Mexico addresses over ninety Lions Lionesses and guests at a Graham Lions Banquet on Liberty Park Mountain. He praises Lions growth to the world’s largest luncheon club, urges civic service and progress, and commends the Graham club’s work and prospects.
The American Legion aims to boost finances with two Monday and Tuesday showings of The Bright Shawl at the National Theatre. Manager Mr Larmour will donate half the ticket proceeds to the boys, who seek Graham community cooperation and plan for Armistice day. Tickets available from Ramsey Drug Store Richard Taylor or any Legion member.
Long writes from Arkansas friend who recalls The Leader reference to his visit and notes the stills have moved into Texas and Oklahoma. Mr C O Smith echoes the claim in his Leader letter and advertises the state's good features in this issue.
