The statement from Superintendent Cogdell outlines opening plans for Graham schools and new district boundaries. Examinations are scheduled for Sept. 1 at 2:00 PM for students needing tests, with compulsory attendance starting at opening.
The Elm Street Bakery opens Butter Krust Bakery Co in Breckenridge at 219 West Walker Street using Veale Drug Co space. T. Baldridge named manager. Modern ovens to produce up to five thousand loaves daily. Baldridge to move from Graham to Breckenridge.
Miss Anna Jean Beard of Loving Texas and Charles D Ray of Greenville South Carolina were quietly married on Tuesday evening August 21 1923 while visiting Mrs T N Brown in this city. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs A G Beard of Loving a leading local family. Friends extend best wishes for a happy and prosperous life.
The Leader reports several new books arrived this week for the Chauttauqua library now housed in City Hall. The ladies hope for a permanent library home within months.
Mrs. Frank Richards and two sons of Mineral Wells and Mrs. John C. Kay and son and daughter of Wichita Falls visited Mr. S. R. Crawford last week. Mrs. Richards and Mrs. Kay, once Miss Georgia and Miss Cornelia Jewell, were pioneer Young county teachers and church pillars.
The Chautauqua Club presents programs at Liberty Theatre on September 7 and 19. Mrs. Fred Moellendick and youths rehearse one act plays to augment regular films, with half the proceeds each night aiding Graham's library building effort. The club seeks local support for a dedicated library space to preserve their book collection for the community.
E F Huppertz state field secretary of Christian Endeavor Texas will address Endeavor work at the First Presbyterian Church on Wednesday night September 5. A short program by local Endeavorers follows with a social hour to close. All Graham residents interested in youth are invited to attend.
Last Friday's athletic meet at the ball park netted about 100 dollars for the Graham schools athletic association. The event, though not fully executed as planned, provided amusement and support for a new season as the football team aims to improve after last year's strong showing. A payment timing misunderstanding kept the Graham team from state honors, but funds from the meet, plus an August 22 payment of eight dollars to the Interscholastic League, assure enrollment for the coming session. The note from Roy Bedich er confirms the remittance and mailing of bulletins to Superintendent H. B. Cogdell. The schedule is in progress with readiness targeted by mid September as veterans depart and new players rise to fill spots.
Manville Brothers comedians perform in a big tent on the regular show ground in front of Moody Brothers Garage in Graham this week after a successful run in Olney last week. The local audience turnout is large with tents filled each night. A Tuesday hearing before Judge Schenck dissolved an injunction that had limited the show.
Sheriff Cambern Deputies Cooper and Howard and County Attorney Rhea raided Tumble Inn in Herron City last week, resulting in two arrests a man and a woman named Little Heavy and Maud Boyd and the seizure of 24 cases of check beer. The couple were held in jail after an exam and bond set at 1500 dollars for the man and 1000 dollars for the woman, who failed to post. The Young County Motor Company burglary led to a later arrest and confession. The report notes the sheriff’s financial hardship funding investigations and requests reimbursements to boost efficiency.
At a Friday meeting the Lions Club discussed and passed adopting the model Texas constitution to expand membership classifications and launch an active campaign. The club will again offer two medals for Gra ham school pupils one for the best in grades and one for upper school. A large attendance was present at the last meeting and the secretary hopes for over ninety percent at this week's luncheon.
The Graham Independent District board announces an equalization session found all valuations needed adjustment and approves a flat twenty percent increase on renditions to cover a roughly $12,000 old deficit. It explains annual costs of $54,500, about $40 per pupil, and State funding covering less than a third.
Work on Graham’s square moved forward with Plains Paving Company representative ES Patton in town for two weeks. Crews widen sidewalks install curb and gutter, beginning at City Hall and tracing the north and east sides to Third Street. Plans include extending paving eastward and potential paving from the square to Shawnee Park. Excavation starts immediately with a 5 inch concrete base supporting 38 inch vitrified brick for a durable surface.
The First Baptist Church Ladies hosted a chicken dinner for the Baptist Sunday School baseball team after their Thursday night game. Plates for thirty were set and the event followed a Baptist win, with Presbyterians seen as their tough upcoming opponent.
The notice directs all regular services at the Methodist church on Sunday. Sunday school at 10 a.m. preaching at 11 a.m. and 7:45 p.m. Senior League at 6:45 p.m. T. E. Bowman signs the announcement.
Mrs Leis L Manry returns from Galveston and will not be connected with the Graham schools this year due to an injury and her mother's fragile health. Her three years of service have been greatly valued and she will be missed by the city.
Mr. Carter of Abilene, representative of the new Methodist College, toured the city to promote the junior school which opens September 19. He said the initial enrollment is expected to be about 200 students.
Mr Jason Mayes and son Harry traveled to Waco for Baylor University graduation exercises. His daughter Miss Bessie earned AB degree. Mrs Mayes and son George spent the summer with Miss Bessie.
The Center Ridge cemetery committee calls all interested to meet at the cemetery on Monday afternoon, September 3, to perform maintenance and work on the grounds.
The Young County Fair association announces the first annual fair with a wide premium range. Exhibits must be in place by November 8, 1923, with two or more entries per class to win first prize. Department directors and officials urge county cooperation and readied exhibits across buildings, livestock, agriculture, poultry, arts, athletics, rodeo, and old relics.
Financial statement shows receipts from gate and DeMolays totaling 109.00 and expenses to Gray Howard, R Bacon, and Graham Leader totaling 30.75. Deposited to Graham High School at First National Bank was 738.25. Also notes John Ware refencing pastures in Stephens county during oil days with drivers taking possession.
Mr. W. D. Spivey spent the day in Graham regarding his nursery business and has just returned from a week long vacation to Oklahoma City.
Mr. Charles Hinson returned yesterday from a trip to Fort Worth. Mrs. S. H. Phillips and children are visiting in Stephens County this week.
Mr I T Gilmer appears in Dallas and Fort Worth this week as a visiting business figure, meetings planned with local firms and potential collaborations discussed during his tour.
