At a Graham school board meeting the opening date was set for September 18. All teachers are secured and assigned to duties. Letters sent to instructors. The curriculum will be updated to current standards. Efforts aim to make this the town’s best school year.
The first primary election judges are asked to serve in the second or run-off primary on August 26 under the Terrell election law. The notice lists judges by district, including West Graham, No. 1 through No. 22, with appointed available pairs and individuals such as W. M. Matthews, J. Wiley Moore, Ed McCluskey, Will Davis, R. D. Tyra, Lewis Rickels, J. J. Barnett, G. R. Thomas, W. Gegg, E. G. Williamson, and A. M. Bowen among others.
Last Thursday the deaths of four notable national figures were announced. Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, is listed among the deceased along with United States Senator William E. Crow of Pennsylvania economist Glenn E. Plumb, author of the Plumb Plan for railroad operation and veteran Tennessee Congressman Lemuel Padgett.
Voters are urged to mark ballots carefully and preserve as much of each ticket as possible. If a voter leaves two names for one office but only one should be voted, count the ballot for the valid choice and infer intent from the face of the ballot. Use a black pencil, keep the party name clear, and scratch through unvoted candidates, avoiding writing on the back.
Mrs W E Eddleman and others hosted a Christian Ball Team evening on August 15 1922 with a unique Called Game on a decorated lawn. Guests found diamond shaped place cards marking positions while a ball and bat of flowers rested center table. Menus listed innings and game terms ending with a toast by H L Tidwell and a cheer from Loyd Moore. Players called it the season’s most enjoyable ball game.
J. C. Owen and his family intend to move to Wichita Falls around September 1. They have long resided in Graham and are regarded as old timers by locals, with many friends expressing regret at their departure and pride that they will remain neighbors even after the move.
Graham Chamber of Commerce remains hopeful for a new Rock Island joint facilities passenger station. Secretary D Walker reports a letter from Frank Kell blaming a strike for delays and pledging continued pursuit and eventual completion.
The Texas Company and the Raleo Oil Company completed new wells adjoining the Roark producer. The Texas Company offset on the Rogers survey east of Roark is flowing 1,800 barrels daily from a 3,800 foot porous lime and sand layer, with two more wells planned to the west on the Jones farm. The Raleo No 2 Roark west offset finished in about 85 days and also yields 1,800 barrels daily. Both wells drilled in roughly 85 days.
Spencer Mayes and Miss Bessie Mayes Evelyn Mead on drove to Wichita Falls Tuesday with Kathryn Cannedy of Beaumont. After leaving Archer City they ran into trouble using spare tubes and Spencer walked miles into Wichita Falls for a new tube. The trip occurred on a sparsely settled route with limited traffic. Spencer, though delicate, showed bravery and gallantry, appreciated by the young women.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Killian of Olney hosted a party Thursday August 10 for Ella Agnes Gilbert and Charles Henry Killian celebrating their fourth birthday. Twenty eight children attended with games, refreshments of lemonade watermelons ice cream and cake, and many presents were given to both children.
Mrs. G L Florence of Gilmer spent last week in town visiting Mr and Mrs D Walker.
Ed Sluder delivered Graham’s first bale of cotton, winning a $50 premium from the Chamber of Commerce and contributors. Second bale premiums total $25. The bale was ginned by Anderson Gin and sold to Joe Carter at 21 cents. Drought yet damages much of Young County cotton, though showers helped some areas.
The Sunday school baseball league in Graham narrows to a three team scramble for first place as Baptists Christians and Methodists chase the top spot. Presbyterians are out of contention though they could still affect final standings if they win all their remaining games. Eleven or twelve games remain and all matchups look close with nearly even records between leaders.
Rex Theatre plans to open Saturday in the former Russell Dry Goods building with Mr. J. G. Coleman as manager. Remodeling includes modern fireproof equipment, a raised floor, and a rebuilt front as the venue aims for a first class show and improved service after his Majestic tenure.
Fire at Wichita Falls & Southern repair sheds in Wichita Falls caused about 10000 dollars in damage at 1 am Monday. Short circuit suspected as the origin. Three engines two passenger coaches and three box cars were damaged but traffic remained uninterrupted. The company says two new engines are en route from Pennsylvania.
J Q Adams, returning from Abilene, planned a California journey but altered plans there. He rode in a car with J H Groene Oscar Groene and another brother. In Abilene he persuaded a Greene brother to replace him for the California visit to relatives.
Seymour Texas shows strong growth with four bond issues passing by large majorities for park improvements city hall water works sewer extension and disposal plant. Plans for a big fair with substantial prizes and a three day trade trip by the Chamber of Commerce are underway. Banner editor O C Harrison was elected president of the Northwest Texas Press Association at Wichita Falls.
Superintendent H B Cogdell mailed copies of the Graham High School Commercial Journal to celebrate pupil work. The Texas School Journal praised the issue noting leading articles on schools oil refining agriculture and farm progress. It credits Graham public school leadership including H B Cogdell for the program’s growth.
Constable W F Thompson of Jean with Deputy Emmett Willis and others reported confiscating several illicit stills in the north end of the county. Earlier they recovered a still near Markley. this week they found another between Jean and Loving, seizing a 30 gallon capacity contraption with contents.
Mr and Mrs G B Johnson and their two daughters returned last night from a visit of several days to Dallas and Denton. They enjoyed their vacation.
P. W. Burdette of South Bend has rented the J. C. Owen residence on East Third Street and will move here about the first of September.
Texas state banks face strict action for unsafe advances on cotton and other farm products. Commissioner Ed Hall says lending must be secured by actual collateral and warns against financing weekly or daily cotton purchases, predicting wide speculation this year and urging banks to stay within safe limits.
The Fred B Foster Company starts a concrete and steel absorption plant in Oilton, seven miles south of Graham, with 6,000,000 million cubic feet daily gas capacity and 2500 gallons of gasoline output. John R Knapp leads the project amid tax issues from the Dowers' Court.
Governor Neff announced the resignation of Ed Hall state Commissioner of Banking and Insurance and the appointment of W. W. Woodson a prominent Waco banker to succeed Hall Hall resigned to become an official in a Dallas bank. The resignation was tendered several days ago and announced today.
