United States Forces Capture Vera Cruz After Staunch Street Fight
U S naval units seized Vera Cruz after a stubborn street battle last Tuesday. Four Americans were killed and twenty-one wounded. Mexican casualties estimated between 150 and 200. Graham boy wins gold in declamation final
Tuesday night Robert Morrison won the gold medal for declamation out of five contestants. Athenaeum and Philenician societies each tested three finalists. Robert, a Freshman, performed The Lost Word under Miss Miller, earning high praise and pride for Graham. He is also succeeding in studies and earned a spot on the Austin College baseball team at Sherman, Texas.

Local showers boost crop conditions in Young County
Young County reports several nine showers since the last issue with improved crops. The first shower Friday night covered a small area and brought hail with little damage. A general county rain began early yesterday and continued off and on throughout the day. Reports say Haskell Albany and Breckenridge saw little rain this week. more rain is expected before night.

Literary Club and a Funeral in Anson
The Chautauquan circle met with Mrs. Mabry and heard Mrs. B W King discuss The Plain of Orchomenus while Rev. Carter spoke on New Zealand habits. James Paxton, a Rochester resident in Haskell County, died April 10 1914 after a paralysis stroke and his funeral was held at Mount Hope Cemetery. He leaves eight children and several grandchildren with many relatives attending the service.
