George Brooks, a Johnson county newcomer near dean, says soil here can produce superior cantaloupes. He notes a two year trial and urges neighbors to plant large acreage for carload shipments to northern markets, promising steady foreign money and an all season trade.
Christian Church reports 201 in Bible School and solid Morning service. Bro Stallings preached on The Power of the Resurrection. No evening service due to Baptist revival progress. All members urged to attend Bible School next Sunday. Friends and strangers invited to all services.
City election held on April 7 centered on the city secretary post. T. E. Wallace was re elected with 166 votes while H. C. Wilson received 44 and A. B. Casburn 35. John Pohlman and James Porter were re elected aldermen.
W F Slater withdraws from the race for Commissioner of Precinct No 4 citing farm business demands. He thanks friends and voters for courtesies shown him and says he cannot devote adequate time to campaign and duties if elected.
News reached here of the death of Mrs. J L Caldwell formerly Miss Cecil Keefe of north of Graham. She died of typhoid fever at her Lyichbock home and was buried in that city cemetery. She moved with her parents from this county about two years ago and was married in Parker county.
A Graham gathering of Young Men's Business League Throckmorton and the Commercial Club endorsed a Fort Worth to Roswell highway. A route via Murray was favored with pledges of 100 per mile to fund the line, after speeches by local leaders and Fort Worth Chamber figures. A visiting Throckmorton delegation joined dinner events and a joint session. Local news also notes a Monument community rabbit drive planned for April 24 inviting all, as pests are said to be controlled by nets and non gas methods.
The United Daughters of the Confederacy held a Monday sale at Wood's jewelry store offering pie coffee sandwiches and candy. Proceeds about four dollars go to a local monument fund honoring Confederate veterans, seen as boosting civic beauty and commemoration.
Sunday School and the regular morning preaching service will be held at the Methodist church next Sunday. There will be no night services.
A revival led by Rev. L. E. Finney of Midland at First Baptist Church is praised as one of the town’s greatest. The sermons benefit all denominations, with large congregations and many additions to the Baptist Church. Choir director Charles Miller and his singing are credited, and last Sunday many were turned away for lack of space. the meeting is expected to continue through Sunday.
A large crowd attended Trades Day last Monday, the biggest turnout of the year. Attendees from all adjoining counties and many from over forty miles away joined in the day’s activities, with favorable weather and broad participation.
