U S attorney C Lee Spillers filed the appeal from a decision allowing Lias to withdraw a guilty plea to one count of tax evasion. Lias, owner of Wheeltar race track and night club figure, was sentenced to five years and a $10000 fine but obtained permission to withdraw the plea and substitute one of innocence. The five count indictment alleged evasion of nearly $1 million in income taxes.

Five men forfeited $11 bond each after failing to appear in municipal police court this morning on gambling charges. They allegedly used fictitious names when arrested by City Patrolmen at Tubby’s Place on St John Street where a poker game was in progress. Tubby Lucas, owner, was not present but ordered to appear in police court tomorrow on operating a gambling house charge.

City Police Report Shows Busy February

One Dead One Jailed After Pool Hall Quarrel
State Police Sgt Callaghan said James Thomas Rogers aged 44 was killed and Franklin Hale aged 26 jailed on a murder charge after a quarrel over a 25 cent debt at Boomer Pool hall. Hale admitted stabbing Rogers saying Rogers drew first with a knife over a 50 cent debt.

March 26 Set for Sale of Taylor County Farm
The Taylor County Farm known as the Poor Farm on U S Route 119 south of Grafton will be sold March 26. Farm implements stock cattle and supplies will be auctioned in front of the county courthouse. Reform School Student Winner In Elkins Oratorical Contest
Carl Owens a 16 year old resident of Huntington from West Virginia Industrial School for Boys Pruntytown placed second in the district American Legion Oratorical contest held in Elkins. He is coached by Betty Riley and Reverend J C Gould with Paul Bartlett as principal. Owens earns 18 dollars cash and a 100 dollar Davis and Elkins College scholarship. First prize went to a Elkins high student who won a four year scholarship. Joan McKinney of Grafton Senator High represented her school while Wayne McCauley of Flemington High also competed. Seven schools and eight represented from four counties including Elkins High West Virginia Industrial School for Boys Flemington Pickens Parsons and Grafton Senior High. This marked the Industrial School’s first participation.
