Lieutenant John Garden and Ensign Eugene Krause landed two aircraft near Quonset Point after Garden’s craft ran low on fuel. Garden refused to share his destination or address while Krause’s plane touched down safely. The pair had departed from Wilgrove, Pennsylvania, with a prior stop at Grove, Pa.
Washington June 25 Army Secretary Royall ordered state adjutants general to stop recruiting National Guardsmen for fall draft. President Truman signed the two year selective service bill creating a 2,000,000 man armed forces fund and signaling a broad shift to peacetime draft. Registration may begin around August 16 with 4,000 local boards to handle 18 through 25. draftees start training in September or later.
The Grafton City Hospital board appointed Dr Jerome C Arnett of Rowlesburg and Dr Lewis E Nolan of Fairmont as medical staff consulting pathologists effective immediately. Both were approved by the hospital staff at a clinical meeting yesterday and will use hospital facilities without relocating to Graton.
John J. Lewis and most soft coal operators signed a new contract providing a $1 per day wage increase and doubled funding for miners welfare pension. An official for steel industry mines balked at the union shop term, claiming it violates labor law. Mrs Zella Conaway died at Grafton City hospital yesterday. Daughter of Jacob O Atha and Elizabeth Billingsley Atha, she was born June 21, 1874 near Mannington. She taught at 18 in Fairview, married Charles E Conaway in 1893, lived in Fairview then Fairmont, involved with rail and coal interests, widowed in 1908 with five children. She spent 17 years raising them before attending Fairmont Teachers College and graduating with her youngest daughter.
BLUEFIELD June 25 The Huntington regional VA office faced sharp questions from W H Chadwick VPW regional director of service and rehabilitation who said the office has been slower than others in granting disability ratings. He noted only four times in 17 months did its average disability pay exceed the national regional average.
Harold E. Stassen emerged at the Republican convention as a leading contender, walking to the rostrum before 14,000 supporters and urging voters to back Dewey in the next campaign. He held his line for possible ballots but Dewey’s strength proved decisive as the roll favored the eventual nominee.
