36 Dispensers of Poisonous Liquor Bowery Habitues Caught In Net
New York June 11. Accused of selling poisonous liquor, 36 proprietors bartenders and Dobuneers from smoke shops along the Bowery were arrested today. Spurred by 32 deaths within a month from polsopods alcohol and other deadly concoctions dispensed to Bowery habitues at 14 and 25 cents a drink, Major Maurice Campbell prohibition administrator led 50 federal agents in a raid sweep of drug stores paint shops and speakeasies purchasing samples of smoke and arresting the dispensers. Two agents who drank some of the staff and disregarded a warning fell ill at prohibition headquarters. Campbell said analysis showed some of the seized air to be denatured alcohol.
