Free-For-All Fistic Battle Draws Police to Logan
Logan West Virginia June 10 state police from eight posts were called into Logan after a series of fights started in a small restaurant and spread to the streets. Five men were arrested and arraigned before Justice of the Peace I B Hatfield. Don Chafin former sheriff of Logan county waived preliminary hearing on felonious assault and posted 1000 bond. W C Burleson druggist appealed a $10 assault and battery fine. H E Duncan plumber was fined five dollars and costs. Lukie Curry also fined five dollars and costs. Dr R R Vaughn pleaded not guilty and his case was moved to municipal court. The squires account says the disturbance began after an argument between Duncan and Burleson. Duncan chased Burleson into Chafin’s drug store where Duncan was arrested. Duncan later returned with officers to arrest Burleson and was ordered from the store by Chafin who struck him with a pistol when he refused to leave. Vaughn and Curry quarreled in the court.
