Gas Explosion at Italian Bakery Causes Near Miss

An explosion at an Italian bakery in the Shaw building basement on Ethel Street occurred last evening after a baker lit a cigarette while heating an oven. The man, who started the gas, was only shocked and not seriously burned.

Charles Dent, a Red Cross pharmacy pharmacist on the West Side, suffered a severe fall while attempting a six foot jump from the shop step to the curb on Walnut street. He sustained a deep head gash but was treated and returned to work the following day.

Arrest in County Jail Disturbance After Fit of Fever

Adolph Ransom, a Belgian worker from Knotts Avenue, caused a near riot last night around 8 80 o clock by becoming temporarily demented and threatening to kill his wife family and himself. Police Chief Mays and Officer Clark arrested him after he fled. Ransom spoke no English and claimed to be the man sought, threatening further violence as he was taken to the Mayor’s office.
