Farmers in the Grafton region hoped a soaking rain would steady crops as the area faced parched ground. Forecasters warned only showers possible in central and southern West Virginia with hints of a general rain tonight. Temperatures hovered in the low 70s at regional readings.
The Weather Bureau noted a record number of tornadoes in the first five months of 1950, with more than 100 lives lost. Officials cited expanded storm reporting networks as the main cause for the rise, not an actual surge in storms.
The Weather Bureau recorded a low of 24 degrees at Grand Miras, Michigan, and a high of 115 degrees at Thermal, California, for Tuesday. The report notes extreme temperature spread across the United States.
Temperatures will average near normal with a slight warmup Thursday. Cooler conditions expected Friday. Warmer days may follow Sunday or Monday. Showers and thundershowers are possible Thursday and perhaps Friday, with accumulations around half to one inch.
Victor C. Willhide and Albert Lansbury led a nine candidate field for two council seats in a quiet election with fewer than 25 percent turnout. Willhide 427 votes, Lansbury 400. They succeed Ben Blackman and A. A. Crouser on July 1. Other candidates and totals listed. polls opened 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. with some precincts under 40 voters.
Charleston reports a 1957 law limiting signs on state highways. It imposes 25 to 100 dollar fines for placing any sign in the right of way and targets posters on trees along roadways to curb visual clutter. The measure, passed by both houses, took effect Tuesday.
A protest letter will be sent to Governor Underwood over a liquor store location within 18 feet of Union Mission Chapel and 70 feet from the Mission Home. Superintendent James Mollendick said he would also address the state Liquor Commission members with the protest.

In Jackson County Jail youths took 68 comic books to a buddy, tucking a 10 inch file in one.
Sen. John L. McClellan predicts a contempt case against Dave Beck Jr and Joseph McEvoy for invoking the Fifth Amendment during Senate Rackets Committee questioning. If approved, cases would go to Justice for prosecution with up to one year in prison and a $1000 fine. McClellan warns the Fifth Amendment could not be used capriciously to derail investigations.
Cabell County Common Pleas Court plans to set a murder trial date for Fimer David Bruner, 39, indicted by a grand jury for the hammer slaying of Mrs. E. Miller after she allegedly caught him robbing her. The case follows Bruner’s confession with no stated motive. A separate indictment targets Marvin Sanford Allen for molesting women in Huntington. Allen was arrested after a 24 hour search.
A dusty Alexandria tax book alleges George Washington owed nine pounds in 1784, listed as delinquent. Assistant City Manager Eugene Barnwell recovered the document while examining old records, noting Washington later paid in full.
President Eisenhower announced opposition to a total ban on nuclear tests while favoring an agreement backed by inspections to prevent future war use.
