Quebec reports a major fire at St Michael L Archange asylum in which 3000 patients were evacuated. One elderly patient died of natural causes as crews fought sub zero conditions and saved about a quarter million in equipment while officials blamed a pyromaniac for the blaze.
Washington February 17 Several Democratic senators said they hope President Roosevelt will bid for party peace when he returns from his Caribbean cruise next month. Senator Brown of Michigan said middle-of-the-road Democrats want harmony and that conditions are ripe to bring divergent party factions together. It’s Up To Roosevelt.
Mrs Ray Robinson of Lincoln Street is invited to attend tonight's presentation of The Thundering West with Charles Stewart at the Dixie and Arrest Bulldog Drummond with John Howard and Heather Angel at the Strand tonight.
Beverly Hills police guarded Norman Taurog’s mansion after a telephoned kidnap threat against his six year old daughter Pat Taurog. Chief Blair said two investigators were assigned to watch the residence after a nurse received the warning last Sunday. Mrs Taurog was near collapse while Taurog himself could not be reached. The FBI declined to discuss the case.
Gilbert White, noted American painter whose murals adorn many U S government buildings, died in a Paris hospital after surgery for an intestinal obstruction. Born July 18 1877 in Grand Haven Michigan, he studied at Columbia University and with Whistler in New York.
Judge Herbert W. Dent disqualified himself in the Taylor county circuit court from hearing the case of C. E. Lawhead receiver of Merchants and Mechanics bank against Charles H. Warder. He ordered the suit transferred to Preston County circuit court due to his wife being a former stockholder in the closed institution.
In Chattanooga Tennessee early today a fire at the National Guard stables destroyed the facilities and caused the loss of seventy horses. The flames also damaged gun racks and ammunition, making firefighting hazardous. The total estimated value reached about ten thousand dollars.
Premier Mussolini and Italian leaders attended a special funeral mass for Pope Pius XI marking official national mourning. King Vittorio Emanuele and Queen Elena joined the ceremony in Rome's centuries old church with fewer than 2000 attendees.
Charleston February 17. Kanawha Coal Operators' association contends the Bluestone flood control dam would permanently destroy 200000 man-days of railroad and mine work yearly. The group says the project has scant flood control merit and may endanger life and property. They accuse federal action without state approval as a flagrant violation of authority.
Dr. Clarence True Wilson, 66, founder of the Methodist temperance book and international prohibition figure, died in Portland Oregon after weeks of uremic poisoning. He led liquor debates and political efforts to win and preserve prohibition, and fought repeal during 1922 federal changes.
President Roosevelt travels by train from Washington to Key West to join the destroyer Warrington and cruiser Houston for a ten day Caribbean maneuvers simulating an Atlantic attack on the canal. The voyage tests eastern defenses and could influence decisions on canal defenses and alternatives if locks are stressed. The trip follows attending to White House duties with Morgenthau Keenan and Crowley aboard.
Charleston reports a morning derailment of eight freight cars blocked the New York Central main line a quarter mile south of Belle. Chief Clerk Charles Stalder said tracks should be cleared this afternoon and no injuries were reported. Cause not yet determined.
A May 1938 consent decree in the Bessie A. Butcher vs. Russell Butcher divorce was set aside in part by Judge Herbert W. Dent of Taylor County circuit court. The demurrer was overruled regarding Loretta Butcher support payments, and monthly support of $10 was ordered continued.
Paris Feb 17 President Manuel Azana of the government in Spain won strong support for ending the civil War with Britain acting as his agent in peace negotiations with Generalissimo Franco. The Catalonia provincial government and many Madrid leaders backed Azana. British agents were negotiating for Azana at Burgos and through Insurgent envoy Jose Marie Quinones de Lion in Paris as to leniency and surrender terms. Continued on page eight.
Rome reports rumor of a shooting near Premier Mussolini's Villa Torlonia home. An official denial stated no attempt on Il Duce's life occurred recently. One rumor claimed a man shot a detective asking for ID two days ago.
Hade Shumaker, 27, wounded in a warehouse gun battle with state police, was given a chance to avoid leg amputation. His brother Lee, 28, was killed and Roy, 20, captured and charged with robbery as authorities gather evidence against the Shumaker family in a spree of about 40 robberies. Prosecutors plan to present data to the Hardy county grand jury when it convenes February 21.
Hollywood crowd of 500 cheered veteran entertainer W C Fields as associates recounted stories he denied, while the Philadelphia juggler's 40th year as an entertainer was celebrated. A heckler and a playful moment with Charlie McCarthy added color to the night.

Washington February 17 United States plan to spend 52 million dollars to stop stream pollution from abandoned coal mines by finishing WPA and PWA efforts to seal mine mouths. The National Resources committee urges federal action and funding.
Magistrate Hulan Capshaw suggested Arthur Flegenheimer bodyguard may have staged arrest while James J. Hines faced racketeering charges. Capshaw testified he believed the arrest could be a scheme with the magistrate left holding the bag. District Attorney Dewey said Capshaw was improperly influenced by Hines.
Health officials ordered closures of schools churches and theatres in Champaign and Urbana to curb a flu outbreak affecting an estimated 2,500 to 3,000 people. Public gatherings were banned while the University of Illinois remained open. Dr. Robert A. Black noted indications the metropolitan outbreak was subsiding.
Charleston February 17 A waxe hour measure to set a 25 cent minimum hourly wage and a 44 hour week was introduced in the house of delegates by Speaker Kay Thomas. The bill says labor conditions harm living standards and constitute unfair competition in production and service.
Huntington grand jury reports criticism of police for lack of diligence in suppressing gambling. Four day probe found no sufficient evidence for indictments but urged abolition of theater bank rights. Prosecutor Winters named in the statement as excused from the charges of lax enforcement.
The Grafton Rotary club held an open forum at its regular weekly dinner in the Y M C A. Delegates to the district conference in Huntington in May and the international convention in Cleveland the following month were discussed.
