Charleston February 18 Governor Holt’s plan faces potential hard fights as the 44th legislature nears end. Washington February 18 Dr Francis E Townsend told the house ways and means committee that his old age pension movement had dipped into politics up to their necks Some committee members said the Townsend organization had moved within range of the corrupt practices act which required reports on political contributions and expenditures But Rep Duncan Mo said he had no intention to press it Townsend spent the day answering questions on the stand.
Washington, Feb. 18. A disclosure that President Roosevelt overrode War department objections to French purchases of American made bombing planes dominates early Senate debate over the administration armament program. The Army expansion bill, about 376 million dollars, faces Senate action within two weeks. Johnson raised objections. Roosevelt said the sale was legal and proper, while the committee questioned the grounds of the objections and the president’s involvement. Continued on page four.
The National Coal Association says the U S coal industry lost over 60 million dollars in 1938. From 1928 to 1936 losses totaled 275 million dollars, and the bituminous coal commission estimated 37 million dollars lost in 1937, amounting to a combined loss since 1928.
Detective John Gallagher said William Blatz, 32, identified by fingerprints as a former state hospital escapee, was captured after holding up a north side tavern and shooting a customer. Police detectives Gallagher, Boyles, and Fitzsimmons arrested him after he was pointed out as the gunman.
