Compensation ruling shapes widow's claim and rail case
In Charleston on December 9 the supreme court effectively required the Carter Coal Company to compensate widow Victor Cawski for her husband Walter’s death, ruling the killing occurred at work. Separately, the Summers county case upheld the city's position that closing the Avis crossing was a governmental act, blocking a damages suit for property loss.
