President Roosevelt assailed political profiteers opposing the New Deal farm program while its fate neared a Supreme Court test. He cited farm income rising by nearly 3 billion dollars in 30 months and praised the Canadian trade treaty as agriculture’s gain not loss.
Unofficial reports say 850 Ethiopians and 700 Italian Somalis killed in a battle north of Dolo on the southern front. Mussolini vows to defend Italian interests strenuously in a brief Senate address before princes and cabinet members.
Coroner F X Schuller reported the death of five year old William Keith Misner in Huntington from acute alcoholism. He drank whiskey found on a kitchen table while the family slept.
Washington December 9. Shouted charges of liar echoed as industry and government spokesmen clashed at the opening of a business conference summoned by George L. Berry for industrial cooperation. About 2000 industry labor representatives filled the commerce department auditorium while John W. O Leary sought floor time but was refused. A P Hooke of Chicago was among those seeking to speak.
Norman H Davis, representing President Roosevelt, urged a 20 per cent reduction of existing naval treaty tonnage at the London conference. The address, delivered to diplomats and admirals of five powers, urged progressive disarmament while pledging to seek other paths to prevent a naval race if equal cuts were not possible.
The American Liberty League's national lawyers committee labeled the Guffey soft coal control act unconstitutional, saying it overreaches Congress by regulating production and infringing producer and worker liberties. The panel warned the move could reach all industries, threatening private sector rights, while noting the act was upheld in part by judges. The report, signed by leaders from Chicago, Pittsburgh, Birmingham, and Minneapolis, continues on page three.
The U S Supreme Court refused to review Bruno Richard Hauptmann's conviction for kidnapping and murdering the Lindbergh baby. The denial, issued in a list of orders, means only court clerks and reporters heard the single word Denied. Hauptmann's attorneys had said they would seek a new trial or appeal for clemency if review was refused.
