P H Donlon hosted 350 people at a Sunday afternoon farm reception for teachers and pupils from eight Lost Island districts. Music by the Lost Island string band, short talks by Ruthven Supt Van Essen and Mrs Baldwin, and watermelon treats highlighted the event with many out of county guests in attendance.
Attorney J P Hand speaks for the Home Loan Owners Corporation in Fort Dodge outlining an emergency loan method. Prospective applicants are advised to write to district manager C J Haire with mortgage details, foreclosures or arrears, property value, and related circumstances to obtain relief.
Terris High School football scrimmaged Graettinger Friday night, testing running plays passing and punting. Coaches watched for weak spots and gave players targeted instructions. Terris plays Spencer next Monday, while Graettinger opens at Emmetsburg Friday afternoon.
The Graettinger Civic Chorus is being organized by the Commercial Club to present musical comedies cantatas and oratorios for the community. A chorus of about 60 voices is sought with weekly rehearsals. The chorus will operate on a profit sharing basis with profits from performances divided among members. Harry Keller is director with tutorship from Henri Verbruggen. Local residents act as sponsorship contacts for signups.
A Graettinger public schools reception for teachers occurred Tuesday at Rev. and Mrs. James P. Christensen home. Sponsored by the P T A, it welcomed staff and fostered goodwill, with a program of songs, a history paper, a violin and piano solo, and a male quartet. A lap luncheon followed as patrons renewed acquaintances and saluted the teaching staff for a promising school year.

Picnic at Emmetsburg on August 20 featured dinner, races and stunts for members Franz Swanson Maude Hamilton Stone and Edge from Ruthven and Emmetsburg. Attended Sioux City convention August 22 to 24. Graettinger unit sent candies and $1 for Knoxville ex service birthday gifts and cookies for Knoxville birthday party. September 12 meeting at Maude Hamilton home elected officers for the year: Swanson president Lewison vice president Hamilton secretary Memine treasurer Cameron chaplain Paulsen historian.
Burt and Graettinger marshals searched concessions during celebrations on Labor Day. They sought a warrant for a concession operator in Burt, found he was not in Graettinger, and noted Graettinger hosted a splendid event.
The Clay County election on September 26 names A. H. Avery as the Republican candidate. Democratic contender appears as Mrs Ella Morgan with unclear phrasing and partial names.
Estherville witnessed a double ring wedding on Saturday September 16 at eleven in the forenoon as Miss Hilda M Petersen and Mr Albert Luke Jr united in marriage. Attendants were Mrs Alfred Luke and Alfred Luke Jr. A beige tan silk crepe gown adorned the ceremony and reception followed at the bride's parents home with garden flower decor and a pink and white wedding cake centerpiece.
Last week was cool and cloudy but Sunday the weather man relented and since then we have had perfect summer weather. Monday was a genuine July day and Monday night a hot summer night. High winds developed during the night and a light shower of rain passed over. Tuesday the sun was shining brightly and the air was again as balmy as a July day. With this kind of weather it is difficult to realize that yesterday was the first day of fall. Corn is practically all out of the way of frost.
The Iowa Theatre Emmetsburg presents the 1933 comedy International House Sunday and Monday September 24 and 26 with a starry cast including Peggy Hopkins Joyce W C Fields Rudy Vallee Stewart Erwin Burns Allen Sari Maritza Stoopnagle and Budd Cab Calloway Baby Rose Marie Bela Lusoni Sterling Holloway Loni Andre Franklin Pangborn Edmund Breese and fifty international beauties Also promoted is The Power and The Glory starring Spencer Tracy and Colleen Moore showing October 1-2 at the IOWA Des Moines Paramount clash Spencer Young Man Turpitts in a Spencer hitchhiking mishap Ruthven postmaster Ray Gleason named and Earl Carney joins Emmetburg Junior College squad.
Taxes for the second half are due during September. A penalty will be attached if not paid by October 1.
The Hawkeye theater announces new show hours and priced admissions. Friday offers one 8:00 pm show while Saturday and Wednesday present two shows starting at 7:30 pm. Admission varies by age and day, with special prices for children and adults. Attractions include Today We Live on Sept 22-23, Jack Holt in Man Against Women on Sept 27, and Laurel and Hardy in Devils Brother on Sept 29-30, plus First Class Pictures.
A fair crowd gathered northwest of Immetsburg on Sunday afternoon for rodeo and stampede events. Admission charged 25 cents and 10 cents with a complete program and performances delivering value for fans.
A big eight team kitten ball tournament will climax Graettinger’s season next Sunday September 24 at Graettinger Nursery Field. Teams from Ruthven Fallon Emmetsburg Wallingford Estherville and Graettinger compete for the 1933 sectional title. Play starts 12 30 p m with admission 10 cents for adults and 5 cents for children. Don’t miss the world series of kitten ball.
Graettinger High School football travels to Emmetsburg Friday for its season opener. Though many players have game experience, several will face their first real contest. A large local delegation plans to attend the afternoon game as both teams begin the season.
A four county picnic will be held at Estherville on September 30. It is a joint event of the Farmers Union and the Farm Holiday association, including Palo Alto Emmet Jackson and Martin counties. Prominent speakers will address the gathering. the full program appears in next week’s Times.
A letter laments Tuesday’s gold dollar at 65 cents on the New York exchange, the lowest in fifty years, arguing that even 50 cents would mean better times and questioning why farmers and laborers pay 15 cents tribute to capitalists.

Algona hosts an All-Star Air Show on September 24 with speed races, parachute jumps by Grace Hedenstron, and stunt flying including flying upside down. Notable pilots Ed Buse Dave Baker Leo Brennan Claus Cordes and more from Des Moines Ames Waterloo Fort Dodge participate. Iowa Air Show Co. promotes the event.
