Crop report praises midsummer weather and yields
Dubuque reports from the Illinois Central Railroad show favorable conditions in northern Iowa and southern Minnesota with plentiful rains and above normal temperatures. Late crops progress well, most corn beyond frost danger by week’s end, hay and pastures improve, and fruit crops largely fail with apples and plums down about 38 percent. Silos filling, threshing near completion in some districts, but ground hard for fall plowing. Also reports a jail arrest in Sheldon for malice against livestock and an unrelated note from Hawarden about a suicide note clue.
