Frank Sullivan Home From France
Frank Sullivan son of Mr and Mrs Sullivan of this place returned from France Monday morning mustered out at Camp Dodge the thirteenth. He served two years and three months including twenty one months in France. He sailed December 15 1917 landed Christmas Day on Leviathan route to Blois then Gaievres with the 16th Infantry. He spent 21 days in front lines in a quiet sector and was later in the quartermasters corps. He recalls the Marne evacuation and Chateau Thierry turning point and notes French and British losses and American resurgence. He saw a South Dakota boy wounded and describes German artillery and rifle fire. He believes the armistice relief and American logistics led to victory and that Germany would have felt American strength if war continued. He praises British aviators and compares German, French, American and British fighters. He ends noting the nine months after armistice felt like nine years and that some fellows remain in France guarding prisoners.
