Hartley farmer nearly loses wad in Sioux City swindle

Hartley farmer fell for a chain of con men posing as investors in a Sioux City scam. Four Swedes and accomplices offered a $10,000 windfall through a staged four man scheme, using fake telegraph rooms and cash pile illusions. The victim signed a check and traveled to Sioux City to collect, but investigators and a U.S. marshal intervened as police closed in, the supposed room with the cash empty and the criminals vanished.

A three year old girl from Britt visiting the Park at West Bend lost flesh and forearm when a bear grabbed her hand through a cage bar after being crowded. She was taken to Algona hospital as investigators work on the incident.

Amputation Threat After Park Bear Accident

A young girl suffered a severe arm injury after feeding a bear in a park. The incident, blamed on a child attempting to imitate feeding, prompted warnings about the dangers of taming wild animals in captivity. The girl's name was not available at the time of report. Mrs. M C Kirby of Estherville mother of John P Kirby and Mrs B F B Kelly died at her home Monday. Funeral conducted from the Catholic church Thursday. A highly esteemed resident, she was 75. The Times extends sympathy to the sorrowing relatives.
