The state fish and game commission halves open pheasant days to Friday and Saturday this year. Counties may gain an open season by petition with 150 farmer signatories. up to three birds per day if granted. Wardens pledge strict policing after fewer arrests last year. hunters should seek owner permission and avoid trespass.
CG F Walden reports Swan Lake in Emmet County is now dry with all water evaporated. Years ago it was a popular fishing site. a drained lake section reduced natural fish breeding and there has been no game fish since. Walden notes concession applicants Labor Day included Holmqeist of Fort Dodge, son a blacksmith who worked for Martin Jenswell in Graettinger. Another concession man, former Ringsted resident Art Rasmussen, now in Chicago, has worked concessions during summer.
Emmetsburg reports Miss Edrna M. Oliver county superintendent says the Towa Dental Plan from the bureau of dental hygiene and State University of Towa will start in Palo Alto county rural schools. Over eighty Iowa counties covering 136 000 rural pupils will participate this year as dental defects affect 85 to 95 percent of children, causing illness and absences. Thomas A. Gardner of the bureau will speak at the county institute in Emmetsburg High School on the need for child dental care and how to run the program.
Supt McMuffen installs typing course in Graettinger public schools with Miss Dunn in charge. Short hand class cannot begin due to no vacant period. Board purchases typewriters desks and tables for bookkeeping class. Miss Dunn oversees the subject.
Graettinger High School starts the 1991 football campaign Friday afternoon at the new field north of the Blaenbast home facing Emmetsburg High. Coach Arney has the team in top shape after two weeks of hard practice and expects a large crowd for Graettinger's first big game.
The Gruettinger Commercial club met Monday and decided to lease the V3 Flsenbast property for an athletic field in conjunction with the Gruettinger Independent select district. A letter from Emmetsburg Commercial club wished Graettinger people a successful Labor Day celebration and included their closing resolution. C. A. Jensen and H. A. Elaenhast acknowledged receipt of the letter, with other matters discussed.
The Times advertises a large stock of Christmas cards from the plant. It promotes an assort boxed set of 25 cards priced at $1.26 printed or 85 cents unprinted, claiming double value versus a 21 for $1 box sold by peddlers, with a printed name option at $1.25.
Rueben Johnson, visiting from California, remarked the Okobofi waters were shallower than years ago. He dived Sunday and struck a rock, inflicting a gash over the eye and requiring a bandage for several days.
A weather note describes a nice shower Tuesday evening and a light shower Wednesday morning. Moisture faded after daylight as sunshine returned in the afternoon. Warm weather persists with no lasting rain.
John Gappa Sr 76 died at his Fairmont Minnesota home after a brief illness diagnosed as intestinal flu He had long lived in Palo Alto County then moved to Marrmont He is survived by his wife five daughters and four sons A nephew Andrew Gappa resided in Graettinger area The Kleigl family suffered multiple losses in recent months The Times extends sympathy to the family.
A district meeting of sheriffs deputies and county attorneys met at the Kermore hotel Friday evening under Mr Stevens of the state motor vehicle department. He described provisions of the new auto law and enforcement duties. A round table discussion followed, highlighting traffic rights and violations. Similar sessions have occurred in Oelwein Mason City and Sheldon, with 22 more planned statewide this month.
The Labor Day event at City Hall was chaired by Charley Jensen and Max Baum who also led the 1931 celebration. Newly elected officers for the 1982 celebration were chosen, with strong attendance and sound finances reported for the era’s Labor Day observance in Grachtener.
Ben Bradley was hurt at the base of the nose and over the eye when his car collided with a truck driven by Olie Nock near the Dunigan place west of the farm home. Glass was broken in the Bradley vehicle. Omro Cottington named supervisor to replace the late Bred Smith after a vote by the recorder, auditor and clerk of court.
Governor Turner selected M. L. Speth of Wallingford as a member of the corn board, noting the choice as an excellent fit for this region.
Local Graettinger merchants push a business drive this week with the Times featuring special display ads. Osher’s store promotes low prices in theprocery department and seasonable merchandise. Christensen Variety, Thompson’s Grocery, C A Jongen, Henderson Furniture Co, and Rend advertise specials and saving offers.
Secretary Leo Dailey of Clay County Fair reports hundreds already reserve the new $45,000 grandstand. Patrons urged to book early by phoning Spencer. Attendance expected to break records despite more seating. County road paving nearly done, weather unlikely to affect plans. No price increase. family day Tuesday allows free admission for children and five cent seat in the warmstand. Box seats and bleachers priced accordingly.
The September P T A meeting at the High School Tuesday evening opened with community singing led by Miss Misabeth Spies. A program included a secretary and treasurer report and a talk on library use by Mrs M J Riody, health remarks by Mrs A TH Cameron, and an instrumental solo by Milene Sandvng. Despite rain, attendance was fair.
Early Sunday a wind storm struck Wallingford and Estherville. Trees were uprooted and limbs scattered. the M and St. L roundhouse at Estherville was damaged. The storm spared Gruettinger. Card of appreciation from Mrs. J A Wieming for Rochestor notices. Ben I Reaves Sale set for October 5 featuring pure bred Poland China hogs.

Frank Huskey reported a theft of 1260 dollars from Emmetsburg. Sheriff Leo Shea collected fingerprint impressions and a day later Huskey found the money in his yard. The episode warns against carrying large sums and suggests future banking.
Palo Alto County Holstein Bull association to hold a Graettinger sale at Werthesiluy starting 1 PM. Forty head of purebred and high grade Holsteins, all TB tested, offered by overstocked consignors. Notable cows include dams with CA records up to 582 pounds butterfat and a 502 pound record. First such sale in this area. Complaint cites Graettinger school youths speeding on streets near the school zone. A Graettinger resident narrowly avoided being struck by a speeding vehicle driven by a high school student. Officials warn leniency varies by location and emphasize stopping this dangerous practice.
Fire destroyed the Legbritson farm residence west of Wallingford on Saturday morning. Tenant A Starkey lost all household goods and $110 cash. The owner, Albert Les, carried $960 insurance on the building. Starkey had no insurance. Later, Picnic Sunday Largely Attended by American Legion and Legion Auxiliary at Lost Island State Park with 23 families and 90 attendees.
Mrs Mleming is back home in Graettinger after a stay at Rochester Hospital. Mr J A Mleming brought her home by car and she is recovering well though not yet able to go about. Friends will be glad to learn of her rapid progress.
Workmen began clearing trees Monday on the B. Elsen bast property in Graettinger’s northwest. The ground leased for five years by local businessmen through the Graettinger Commercial club and the Graettinger Independent School District will serve as a diamond for baseball and also suit football and kitten ball. The project, rushed for Friday’s Emmetsburg game, used dynamite to remove large roots and a capstan and cable to pull trees. Ed Cohn tractor aided smaller trees, with labor mainly funded by local merchants.
An early morning blaze on the L. M. Winnestad farm 24 miles east of town, formerly the C. F. Ruske farm, destroyed the barn and granary with hay and outs. The fire started in the loft and spread before discovery. Fenton fire truck responders aided, but the silo also burned from embers.
A farmer reports out of season pheasant hunting near his land and a suspected kill of undersized brood birds. The Canton area is highlighted by Conrad Fogde praising Canton South Dakota as thrifty and prosperous, noting Rev. Edward Nervig’s large Lutheran congregation with about 1200 members.
Mr and Mrs T A Dunmire and daughter of Titonka spent Saturday and Sunday visiting at the J A Spies home. They like their new location and have many friends here who are always pleased to meet them.
A golf tournament is in progress with Graattinger leading after the first round at Emmetsburg. The second round is expected to be played next Sunday, with players aiming to improve their standings.
