Commencement Week Activities Highlight Graettinger Event

The Graettinger senior class presents the play Winning Schemers at the Hawkeye Theatre on Friday May 19 with two shows at 2 PM and 8 PM. Baccalaureate sermon by Rev James P Christensen follows. Diplomas awarded next Tuesday evening after an eight o clock program led by Dr L E Jones. Also notes a small tornado near Luverne in Kossuth county last Sunday.

Art Jensen of West Bend and his brother Will Jensen of Graettinger will open a general store at Fenton on June first. Art Jensen brings experience and will manage with Andrew Jensen holding an ownership stake. Andrew already co-owns Jensen & Bolstad in West Bend. The Times wishes him success.

Stephen Bailey Dies in Wisconsin at 80

John DeLawyer reports Stephen Bailey aged 80 died at Arthur Kinney home in Amery Wisconsin on Sunday May 7 after a long illness. Born in Kent County England he came to the United States in 1876. Survived by a brother and sister in England and a half brother John T Bailey of Amery. Funeral held in Amery May 9 and burial in Amery cemetery. Local residents remember him as a fine gentleman who lived here years ago and worked on area farms.

Goldfield Bees Too Active For Comfort

H. C. Oviatt of Goldfield filed a suit in Wright county court seeking an injunction against B. J. Beck to stop bees from roaming at large. Beck owns seventy swarms and neighbors cannot hang washings or work in their gardens without disturbance. The bee issue was moved before the case reached court, and the judge ruled Beck must pay court costs of thirty dollars.

Kathman Boys in Graettinger Auto Accident

Clifford and Lawrence Kathman of Graettinger were in a Sunday night auto crash near Ruthven. Their car was badly damaged but the brothers escaped injury. Memorial Day program planned by the American Legion in Graettinger for May 30 with details to come in next week’s Times.

Golden Eagle Steals Lamb From Algona Farmer

Alex McArthur near Algona reported two lambs lost from his farm and then witnessed a large Golden Eagle fleeing with a third. He shot at the bird, stunned it, and kept it in his garage for two weeks until a game warden collected it. The bird stood about two feet tall with limited wing span.

Estherville Beautifies City Park Area With Plantings

Estherville city crews are completing work in a park near the swimming pool area. Rock gardens flower beds and rip-rapping along the creek are nearly finished. Shrubs evergreens and birch trees were supplied by Graetinger Nursery for the project.

Catholic church devotions shifted from May 21 to May 28 due to baccalaureate services. Pocahontas launches a main street paving project with graveling for roughly $25,000 to be assessed on abutting properties over ten years.

Passenger plane trip described by Mrs Hart

Mrs H I Hart of Laurens recalled a flight that began in Pittsburg at 1 15 p m on Sunday, then switched planes in Chicago and landed in Des Moines at 7 50 p m where Mr and Mrs W I Boyd of Pocahontas welcomed her. The Chicago to Des Moines leg carried a ton of mail and twenty passengers.

Stranger Killed By Rock Island Train Tuesday

An unidentified man, about 50, dressed well and clean shaven, died after jumping from a 10 foot embankment into a moving Rock Island freight train near Swea City on Monday at 1 30 PM. A passerby passenger Arthur Schneider of Algona witnessed the incident and alerted the engineer. The injured man was taken to Swea City and later to Armstrong after receiving help from Dr Whitlow. He carried a putty knife and spoke of a painting job near Humboldt before his death four hours later. He weighed 140 pounds and stood about 5 10, with gray streaked hair.

Rev. Father Leo McEvoy traveled from Ruthven on Monday to take home shrubbery for planting in the Ruthven church yard and cemetery. Graettinger Nursery provided a large quantity of trees and shrubs for this effort over the past weeks.

Live Stock Mart Busy Saturday in Graettinger

An immense sale of live stock, especially hogs, occurred in Graettinger last Saturday. D. C. Barringer bought five hundred head and placed them on feed near the Des Moines river east of town. Local buyers paid a top of 4.30 dollars Saturday. Fishermen faced poor luck on opening day Monday May 1 as storms affected nearby lakes. Graettinger saw only a light forenoon sprinkle with no rain.
