In a heated campaign scene a battle array favors the assessor as two tickets are recruited to full strength. The mayorality duel between Heasion and Cameron looms with the boom of the campaign audible across the city.
Graettinger voters head to the polls on March 25 for a hard fought city election. Candidates for mayor include Dr. P J Hession and council seats held by I Noble F E Dr M Jr Reidy Dr L Asvndgey and A J Johnson plus treasurer John Herberger. Afternoon caucus named D W Cameron councilmen Thomas Allen Louis Christiansen John Y and EL T Petersen and treasurer Eugene Foster with J L Rogers as assessor. Campaigns intensify as two gatherings produce candidate slates for the race.
Graettinger hosts a tight school election with 144 votes cast. P G Johnson and L T Petersen win the 8 year director seats, Bernard Smith trails. E A Baumgartner wins the 2 year post while H V Dickey loses. Chris Henningsen captures the 1 year term defeating Ward Noble. Dr M J Reidy is treasurer with 180 votes.
The United States Civil Service Commission announces a rural carrier examination in Emmetsburg at 10:30 a m on April 13 1918 to fill a post at Graettinger and future rural route vacancies in Palo Alto County. Open to male citizens domiciled in the county with Form No 1977 requirements. Applications urged to be sent to Washington at earliest practicable date. Wallingford Market Day March 23 features horses cattle hogs farm machinery grain hay feed seed poultry and more auctioneer Grodland of Graettinger will cry. J A Nelson of Wallingford will clerk. Also a Times Roll of Honor lists renewals from O L Paugh Ringsted I D Hurlburt Graettinger James McCarty Graettinger Sam Helvig Radcliffe F S Shadle Estherville Rich Aylward Graettinger and Loretta Mahan was a passenger to Emmetsburg.
Red Cross appeals for surplus and used clothing to aid Belgians and northern France. Requests include men's and boys wear, shirts, undergarments, coats, socks, womens and girls wear, bed coverings, and blankets. Donations to the sewing rooms at the First National Bank or contact Mrs. E. S. George. Also notes February shipments from Lost Island branch and upcoming Red Cross meetings.
Several young men from Grachtinger and vicinity are at Emmetsburg today taking the physical examination for the next draft quota.
