Emmetsburg Double Murder Trial Ends In Self Harm Incident

A man identified as Blake McMacken fatally shot William Laughlin and William Boblit, then turned the gun on himself but survived with serious chest wounds. The incident occurred at the McMacken farm near Emmetsburg late Tuesday evening. Police and residents describe McMacken as a volatile figure known for carrying a public safety item. Mrs. McMacken provided an account of quarrels over alleged slander. other witnesses linked the events to a confrontational family dispute. Laughlin and Boblit, both long-time residents, were not known as troublemakers. The pursuing officers and Sheriff investigated, with Blake McMacken alleging self-defense during a heated argument with Mrs. McMacken in the yard prior to the shootings. First Clean Up In Gold Fields Nets Nice Sum

The first clean up of Graettinger area gold deposits yielded 10.30 ounces valued at $206 from a small machine using a mercury retort. Residents John Ingebritson A L Herrem M E Mahan and C T Sevdy backed the work, seeing potential for broader mining with larger machines and outside capital. Past tests showed gold content up to $27 per ton and previous equipment efforts failed, marking this as a cautious experimental start for Graettinger.

Carl Spies sustained a cut above the left eye from a splinter while chopping wood late last week. He received several stitches but the eyeball was not injured, marking a near miss to a permanent injury.

Forced car in ditch after high speed chase

A large automobile driven at high speed from Graettinger on Sunday night forced a Ford into a ditch south of the Jacob Frick place. The Ford sustained heavy damage but no injuries were reported.
