Oil Station Bandit Killed In Emmetsburg Shootout

A liquor store oil station hold up near Emmetsburg Tuesday night ended with a bandit shot dead by Sheriff Fredericksen and City Officer L L Jones as they pursued the fleeing car. Harvey Sorenson was captured and later confessed to related robberies and sentenced to 25 years. The deceased was identified as Claire Christianson of Albert Lea whose age and details are given, and the incident involved a 1930 Pontiac with Cerro Gordo plates. The pursuit spanned Wallingford to Emmetsburg, with rifle fire exchanged and the stop shot aimed to puncture the gas tank.

County Treasurer to Collect Old Age Tax at Graettinger

County Treasurer Cap Nelson will be in Graettinger all day Saturday to collect the old age tax of $1 per head. The tax is payable now and becomes delinquent the first of July. Nelson will be located at the Graettinger State Bank making it convenient for residents to pay.

Plans Made For Big Labor Day Celebration

A City Hall meeting set preliminary steps for the 1944 Labor Day celebration with D E McCarty as chairman and Max Baum wartner as secretary. Committees will be formed to handle details and a speaker of high repute will be invited. A ferris wheel, swing, and children's ride are already secured for the event.

Marriage of Martin Myhre and Nettie Thoreson in Graettinger

Martin Myhre and Nettie Thoreson were married at the Myhre home on Wednesday June 20 1054 at three o clock. The ceremony was performed by Roy M Mandsager pastor of the First Lutheran church. Attendants were Goodwin Horseson and Dorothy Horswell. A weekling dinner for 75 guests followed. The couple will reside in Graettinger. The groom runs City Barber shop and is well known in the area. The bride, a nurse by profession, is also well known locally. The Times extends hearty congratulations and best wishes.

Why Not Pave Highway 17 This Year

Supervisor J M Robinson urged Graettinger Commercial Club and local business leaders to finance paving the Highway 17 gap from Crippen Corner to Wallingford. Highway official Ditto favors the project. Robinson believes it would relieve county unemployment by creating many jobs and circulating money locally. The Commercial club is asked to take the lead.

Ringsted Hosts Big Two Day Celebration

Ringsted announces a two day fête this Thursday and Friday featuring a full entertainment lineup. Friday adds a boxing show at the theater with Emmetsburg’s Joe Gilves headlining. admission is 50 cents. Graettinger fans expect many attend from Graettinger and Ringsted alike to mark the exchange with their Labor Day visitors.

A large Graettinger group attended the Royal Neighbor convention in Estherville with about 300 delegates registered by 30 p m. More than 600 delegates from 21 lodges and southern Minnesota were expected for tonight’s final session in City Hall. Mrs A H Kateley presided as Rev Arthur G Bailey gave the invocation and Mary Slagel welcomed delegates. Local committees prepared an old fashioned garden festival themed setup with flowers and songs from Estherville juveniles.

Fine New Church Edifice For Lost Island

Lost Island township prepares a new church building with plans available at Tel Hormansen. The structure measures 82 feet by 6 feet with 14 foot posts and a full basement, oak floors, plaster walls, and a basement eight feet high. The furnace and light plant occupy dedicated rooms. completion is targeted for October with an estimated rent of $6,000.

Dolliver Store Robbed After Graettinger Attempted Theft

A Dolliver general store was robbed the night after Graettinger's attempted robbery. Police suspect the same strangers were involved. Separately, the Roth Ecclesia Choir arrived in Los Angeles today, completing a U.S. tour. Miss Geneva Reeves is a choir member. The group had visited Graettinger Sunday the 20th and gave a concert there.

Windy Night Causes Notable Destruction in Graattinger Area

A sultry day gave way to strong winds Tuesday night in Graattinger territory. Emmeteburg saw little rain, while Ruthven reported extensive damage including a torn roof at the M. I. church and partial wall collapse. The pumping station lost its roof and two doors, with total church damage over $5,000 and some damage to telephone and electric lines.

Lefroy Bergeson captured the Stock Yards golf title at Sioux City Boat Club after a seven hole contest with Bill Johnny, winning in extra holes to emerge champion. Bergeson advanced by beating Jack Gratton 6 and 6, while Bill Johnson defeated Cy Foster to reach the final. Johnson had led in the morning round before Bergeson overtook him in the afternoon.

First Communion Class At Catholic Church Sunday

A class of 21 boys and girls received their first holy communion at the Catholic church Sunday. Instruction had been led by Father Kelly for several weeks. The students were seven and eight years old, marking a large occasion for the parish. Father Kelly is praised for his pastoral success.

Whittemore Man Dies On Highway Tragedy

Donald Weir a 26 year old Whittemore resident died Sunday night after falling from the rear platform of a moving truck on federal route 18 six miles west of Emmetsburg. Lee Howell and Harlow Fish were in the truck and saying they picked up Weir en route to Electric Park for a dance. Sheriff Bert Montgomery arrested them at Electric Park after a passerby reported the fatality. An inquest found accidental death with a skull fracture and crushed scalp. Weir was a known local figure with ties to Emmetsburg and Ruthven communities.
