Halvor T. Peterson aged 88 years 7 months 4 days died June 27 1934 at the home of his daughter Mrs C J Lande Terril Iowa Funeral held Saturday with service at the Lander home and at St John s church Cylinder Iowa Rev L C Wigdahl presiding Burial in Crown Hill cemetery Ruthven Survivors include daughters Mrs Rachel Lande Terril and Mrs Annie Lande Minnesota and a foster daughter Mrs Alfred Fabian Campbell Minnesota Also a brother and two sisters survive The family traced movement from Norway to America and many relatives attended the solemn funeral service

Coach Arney Promoted to Emmetsburg Assistant Coach

Arney Gracttinger’s successful athletic coach has been hired as assistant coach at Emmetsburg High. He succeeds Coach Wakefield after three years teaching locally, producing winning football and basketball teams including last year’s county basketball championship. The community wishes Mr and Mrs Arney happiness in Emmetsburg.

Six Year Old Boy Drowns at Estherville Pool

Dick Otto, six, died Friday in the Estherville swimming pool the first such tragedy since it opened years ago. A lifeguard was on duty and an inquest held the next day found the boy suffered a heart attack. He is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Frank Otto and six siblings.

Death of C H Berdin in Graettinger At 69

C H Berdin of Graettinger died early Sunday July 1 after a long illness. He endured cancer of the stomach and flu, with funeral services held Tuesday at his home and St. Pauls Lutheran church in Graettinger. Interment was in South Walnut cemetery. He leaves six children and six grandchildren, noted as industrious, thrifty, and devout, a trusted citizen of the community.

Fisher Couple In Auto Crash Near Algona

Mr and Mrs William Fisher of Algona formerly Graettinger were in a Saturday night head on collision after their car lights failed. Mrs Fisher suffered head injuries and cuts and was taken to Algona hospital. she is reported recovering.

Republicans Calm at County Convention Amid Shifting Winds

At the Emmetsburg Republicans gathered at the air cooled Iowa Theatre while Democrats met in the court house hall. Republicans tapped Mrs. F. P. Paulaen of Graettinger for county committeewoman and A. W. Smith of Emmetsburg as county chairman. Sixteen delegates were named to the state convention with O. H. Raleigh of Graettinger heading the list. Charlie Christianson of Lost Island among delegates. The Democrats, less settled, saw unrest as they backed C. J. Murtagh of Algona and Mrs. Kalleher of Fort Dodge for eighth district posts, while W. T. Branagan chaired the central committee meeting. A county recorder race pitted Mrs. Long of Independence Township against incumbent Mrs. Brareton. The piece notes a calmer Republican mood versus a restless Democratic tone.

Fourth of July Picnic At South Walnut Church

Large crowd attended the Fourth of July picnic at South Walnut church grounds with an exceptionally large dinner turnout. A. H. Henningsen of Graettinger, Republican candidate for state representative, gave the day’s address and was highly complimented as a capable orator. A children’s race program followed in the afternoon. A demonstration of gallon fruits and berries is announced for Saturday at the C. A. Jensen store with display ads and special prices.

Barney Hassel Headlines Montana Boxing Show

Barney Hassel from Graettinger fought a ten round main event in Malta Montana on the Fourth of July. The Malta card featured 40 total rounds with Hassel facing Tommy Sweeney of Kansas City as the lead bout. outcome not provided. Hassel 56 fights 49 knockouts at 200 pounds. Sweeney 40 fights 30 knockouts at 195 pounds.

Contract Set For New Lost Island Church

The Spencer Construction Co. won the bid to build the Lost Island Lutheran church at 6 376 dollars with completion expected in October. Several Groettinger contractors bid and interest came from other towns. A separate contract will cover the heating system and interior decorating at 8 875 dollars.

Eight Men Survive Lightning Strike At Farm Corncrib

Eight men on the Hal Herke farm were nearly killed when a bolt struck the corn crib at 8 30 am Tuesday and jumped to the conveyor. All were burned mainly on hips and feet, with Lundgren most seriously injured. The blast split the crib and damaged the granary, with an estimated loss near 100 dollars. The workers believed a dynamite blast occurred, and they were stunned by the shock.
