Beaton Massachusetts letter reveals a Harvard research effort into the authorship of plays. Mr and Mrs Leslie Shaver and family of northern Minnesota visited here the week before last with Mr Shaver s parents and numerous relatives and friends He has gained a few pounds since leaving Groattinger Life in northern Minnesota agreed with him despite discouraging conditions and limited work If he finds employment here the family may settle in this city Graattinger friends hope they decide to locate here
Miss Eva Allen 24 daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Allen of Shelton Washington passed away last week after months of ill health. A graduate nurse she had worked in nursing until illness ended her career. Her family moved from Vernon township to Emmetsburg then South Dakota before settling in Shelton. An elder sister Lucinda Allen drowned years ago in Shelton bay. Eva was cousin to Mrs J J Sullivan of Graettinger. The Times extends sympathy to the family.
J M Rash reports E B Steangon of Emmetsburg injured when his car was struck by a speeding truck near Pocahontas. The vehicle ditched, Steangon pinned and burned, another car pulled him free as the truck fled. He was hospitalized and later returned home Tuesday night.
Lloyd Halverson of Windom Minnesota has been hired as assistant operator at Grosttinger Farmera creamery. He previously worked in a Lakefield Minnesota creamery and comes highly recommended. He will train before Frettem departs for Mamereburg while Frattem’s former operator position is filled.
Graettinger and nearby areas saw a soaking rain Saturday night the strongest in three weeks, aiding corn, pastures, and gardens. Wind was not damaging, stalks bent but intact, and further showers are expected to secure a good crop with minimal frost risk.
Holger Geil has been hired as assistant operator in the Emmetsburg creamery. He has assisted at the Fallows creamery and previously worked at a Bellevue, Iowa creamery. Geil is described as a capable workman and will aid Mr Frettam in Emmetsburg.
Local theft spree hits farms and stores with several reports. L. J. Sandvig of northwest of Grachtinger found his butter churn missing after leaving it overnight. A Belmond IGA clerk L A Anderson vanished with a week’s receipts totaling 200 dollars while away at the Chicago fair.
Marlon Nase reports he stopped at Livermore last week on the way home from Fort Dodge to visit with George Robbins. Granting a homemade broadcasting device, George has received hundreds of cards from across the United States. He uses a OC W code akin to Morse, similar to Navy practice, and also broadcasts with a radio phone.
In Manchester Iowa farmer James Havens and his son were loading hay when a rope entangled the father's font and pulled him 40 feet to the loft. The son could not hear cries due to a passing train. The fall stunned the father but no further injuries are reported. Separately Cecil Jones trims the Hawkeye Theatre as woodwork is painted white around windows. George Frick oversees the Hawkeye operations with emphasis on tidy property.
In Chicago a clash between printers and publishers over a national printing code ended with United Typothetae of America members defeating country newspaper publishers six to one. If the UT A wins, Chicago zone plants would be governed by its officials while the National Editorial Association seeks control of the code for country publishers. Struggles like this span many industries and hugh Johnson is called a miracle man if he iron outs the difficulties.
Town public utility official says the proposed change was not a rate offer as reported. The adjustment will go into effect with September billing for towns with populations of 600 or more. W. E. Hamilton, manager of the company, provided details in Grastinger.
Public invitation for the Wagner Ladies Aid to meet Saturday afternoon and evening in the Wagner building. Proceeds from a sale and groceries at the new store will fund village money needs.
The Hawkeye Theatre presents Norma Shearer in Smilin Through and Marie Dressler in Emma with a schedule of show hours. Friday night offers one 8 80 p m showing while Saturday and Wednesday feature two complete shows with an 8 p m first start. Admission is 10 cents for adults and 5 cents for children on Wednesdays and 10 cents for Friday and Saturday. Also listed are the serial King of the Kongo Caught Stealing August 2 and August 6 dates for Emma.
The M. E. Ladies Aid Society will host an ice cream social at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Johnson on Thursday, August 3. A cordial invitation is extended to all to attend.
A P Ekstrom, 94, died Tuesday morning at eight at his daughter's home after a stroke and decline. He lived 94 years 6 months 10 days and had recently regained mobility after a paralytic attack. Funeral services were set for Thursday at his residence at 1 30 p m and St Pauls Lutheran Church at 2 p m with the Rev James P Christensen officiating. An obituary will appear in next week's Times.
Last Thursday evening Wallingford and Graettinger played a kitten ball game ending at darkness with Graettinger winning 22 to 2. Sunda Graettinger defeated Fallon in two games 13 to 4 and 4 to 0. Osgoy beat the River Rats in a wall played game.
Mrs. S. R. Huey of Newcastle Pennsylvania died near White Lake South Dakota Friday when her car overturned on loose gravel.
E L Archer 44 died at Ruthven Monday evening after a sudden illness. Funeral Thursday afternoon. Born at Ruthven April 16 1889 he married Cleo Prather in March 1908. Survived by wife and son Bernard E Archer his mother and several brothers and sisters.
George W. Godfrey of Algona appointed as assistant to President Hughes at Iowa State College Ames in the agriculture department. The state board of education at Cedar Falls confirmed the appointment last Thursday. Godfrey, a well known former state board member and ISU graduate, grew up in Humboldt county and farms near Luverne.
Des Moines July 25 1983 officials unveiled more than 200 acres of exhibits making the 79th Iowa State Fair the nation’s largest of its kind. Highlights include a Back to Fundamentals Farm Exposition a National Livestock Show a large 4 H Club Congress a statewide women’s exposition a farm machinery show a mid season auto show a wildlife exhibit and the annual Art Salon. An expansive entertainment program runs Aug 26 to Sept 1 with lowered admission and expected record attendance.
Four hoboes were killed when a freight train derailed near the depot in Gladwin Town on Friday. A tank car left the rails, causing a pileup and an explosion that poured burning fuel over the depot and a nearby general store. Of the dead, three were from Howey Oklahoma.
A Sunday road crash near Cedar Rapids killed Mr and Mrs Edward Markham and their daughter Dorothy, and Mrs P M Magley of Oelwein also died. The wreck occurred on a paved road, leaving the community shocked by the fatalities.
