The Midland Chautauqua Circuit concludes its 1915 run after weather and poor roads cut attendance, with receipts over $1,000. The paper notes a successful week despite disruptions, praising Bohannan performers, Dr. Clarence W. Wassam, Otis Wing, Ojibway Indians and others, and anticipates hosting again next year under the circuit.
Ayshire Chronicle reports burglars visited Ayshire last Thursday night and tried to break into the Parmers Elevator safe by damaging the dial. They apparently gained entry at Royal Lumber Co. but left with only a newly bought knife after finding the safe open there. Joe Kautzky of Fort Dodge attempted to drill the lock but failed. no clue has been found yet.
The 18 month old daughter of Mr and Mrs Webster Hill near Springfield township drowned in a tank behind the family barn. The yard was fenced and precautions taken but the child escaped through a gate while the mother was occupied. Physicians could not save her. The loss draws wide sympathy.
D W Russell who ran the Cedar Rapids Oil company's business at Spirit Lake was brought back by the Dickinson county sheriff from Colorado. He is charged with being $700 short in his accounts.
A 20 year old Whittemore clerk Avery Kent attempted self harm to end his life with a knife at his sleep room in the DeGraw home. He sustained deep throat and temple wounds, knife blade still embedded, but survived and is reportedly recovering. Authorities note unclear motive, with theories including temporary insanity and troubled love affairs. He will be moved to a hospital in Onawa for further care as his condition improves.
A visitor from Reek Rapids, Iowa, studying Ford's Flint plant notes workers seek lunch and pay more than long hours. He argues good wages and recreation aid contentment, but finds foreigners, especially Poles and Hungarians, dominate the shop. Foremen prefer Americans, yet many workers are foreign-born, and productivity declines without constant supervision.
Mrs L Holmes died Monday afternoon at the family home three miles south of Estherville after more than a year with stomach cancer. She was a kind, generous woman loved by relatives and neighbors. The Marmet county family had lived on the farm for fourteen years. Survived by husband and five children Harry L Vera L Paul T Ethel and Lloyd. Remains were taken to Greene Town for funeral services and burial.
An automobile from McCallaburg collided with H G Shedahl’s buggy Saturday night south of the park where fireworks were seen. The buggy was badly damaged but Mr Shedahl and his children escaped with minor injuries. The car’s headlights were smashed. Roland Record.
Teat resident Christin Ben, working on a telephone line east of town, was in a tree cutting branches when a mis strike caused a deep cut to his left arm between wrist and elbow. Doctor treated with six stitches. Louie bled heavily but is recovering.
Briggs of North Vernon attended a large celebration in Pomeroy on Thursday after returning from the event. He traveled with Clarence and Roy Wikert and Will and Harry Lammers to see the races. The Democrat notes the North Part of the country needs better royals.
O N Young longtime Ringsted resident and businessman died Friday night after leaving his farm near Hoprig. He served as president of Ringsted State Bank and director of Farmers Mutual Insurance. Funeral Sunday at the Presbyterian Church, interment at Armstrong cemetery. Survived by wife Ada and three children, with brother T Young of Pasadena. Local leaders mourn a civic leader and devoted family man. A separate report describes a car engine collision near Ruthven involving Mr and Mrs Miller, with minor injuries to Mrs Miller and no injuries to Mr Miller.
Leo M. Frank, already serving a life sentence for the Mary Phagan murder, was attacked and severely injured in his sleep at the state prison farm in Milledgeville. Fellow prisoner William Creen, also serving a life term for murder, slit Frank’s throat and was placed in solitary confinement. Creen said he believed he was doing right, while officials noted no prior warning of danger.
Mr and Mrs Amos Miller residents a mile north of Ruthven were in a serious accident Friday evening while returning home in their Ford. The Milwaukee railroad crossing signaling and brakeman actions are noted as the train warning occurred at the crossing.
Judge Wright of Mort Dodge presided briefly in Clarion Monday. Harry Johnson pleaded guilty to rape of Myra Sayer of Eagle Grove and was ordered to the state reformatory at Anamosa for up to twenty years. Alice Pay, a sixteen year old Eagle Grove girl, was given the option to reform or attend delinquent girls school at Mitchellville until age 21, and chose Mitchellville.
Four representatives from Iowa State College Ames visited Milford to discuss alfalfa cultivation for Milford Schools. Prof Dunlap spoke at the experimental farm, outlining methods to plant alfalfa with corn or after oats. Seven plots demonstrated planting methods and seed varieties for practical farming outcomes.
Last Monday Chas. J. Gibson and Arthur Richards killed a large water Miccasin in East Okoboji Lake. The 3 foot 6 inch specimen is the first of its kind seen here. After a fierce battle the boys sent it to captivity. Harry Tennant, noted for taxidermy, will anoint the reptile, which Chawie will keep on exhibition.
The Will Dand band has raised about 100 dollars toward building a band stand. A basket social last week brought in over 50 dollars, and a list circulated among local businessmen added about 50 more. The funds will allow a nice stand, with weekly music anticipated in the streets.
